Storyline: Zé-do-Burro, a naive but devout man, has only one possession: his donkey Nicolas. When Nicolas is gravely injured during a storm, Zé-do-Burro promises to carry a cross as large as Christ’s to the altar of Saint Barbara in Bahia, in a Candomblé ritual honoring the goddess Yansan. Nicolas recovers, and Zé-do-Burro, with his wife Rosa, builds the cross and walks to Bahia. At the church, only Bonitão helps Rosa while Zé-do-Burro keeps vigil. The priest, Olavo, outraged at the Candomblé connection, refuses him entry, backed by local zealots. Chaos erupts: Rosa is attacked by a jealous woman, a Capoeira fight ensues, a scandal reporter stirs suspicion, and police are called when Zé-do-Burro tries to force the church door. Amid the ensuing brawl, Zé-do-Burro is shot and dies by the cross. The local black community then honors him by placing his body on the cross and carrying him into the church to Saint Barbara’s altar.
