Storyline:  Widowed patriarch Morten Borgen, a Lutheran leader, navigates religious discord within his family. Mikkel, his eldest, is a good-hearted agnostic whose wife, Inger, is pregnant. Middle son Johannes, believing himself to be Jesus, condemns the era’s lack of faith. Youngest son Anders loves Anne, the daughter of a fundamentalist. Conflict arises when Inger faces complications in childbirth, testing everyone's faith.
