In mid-19th century New York City, Catherine Sloper, a plain and shy young woman, lives under the critical eye of her wealthy father, Dr. Austin Sloper. Despite her efforts, she fails to meet his expectations of social grace. When Catherine meets Morris Townsend, a charming but poor young man, she falls deeply in love. Encouraged by her romantic aunt, Catherine's hopes for marriage clash with her father's suspicions that Morris is after her inheritance.
