Storyline:  In the Paris suburbs, the murder of a maid grips the community, but the withdrawn Mr Hire remains detached. That night, Alice, just released from prison after serving time to protect her lover Alfred, secretly reunites with him as if they were strangers. Mr Hire becomes enamored with Alice and, while observing her closely, begins to suspect who committed the crime.
