Storyline:  In 1910s Paris, sewer worker Chico, disillusioned with life and faith, rescues Diane, a young street girl, from her abusive sister. To protect her from the law, he claims she is his wife, and she moves in with him. Forced to share their lives, love slowly grows between them, even as the looming shadow of World War I threatens their fragile happiness.
