Storyline:  Prague, Bohemia, 1820. Balduin, a penniless student who rescues Countess Margit from drowning, falls in love but feels unworthy of her status. Ashamed of what he cannot offer, he accepts a pact from the enigmatic Scapinelli, trading his own reflection for wealth.
