Elizabeth (1998)

Plot Summary

Set in the 16th century within a divided and violent England, the Catholic Queen Mary dies and her protestant half-sister Elizabeth, who remained imprisoned, assumes the throne. She is perceived as weak while her advisors are divided between those who support her and those who conspire against her reign; moreover, she is pressured to marry and have an heir. This biographical film brought Cate Blanchett international recognition; a historical drama with a thriller feel, subtle yet absorbing.
