Storyline: Iracema, an Indigenous teenager, left her family and now struggles to survive as a prostitute in Belém do Pará. Suddenly, she crosses paths with Tião Brasil Grande, an unscrupulous truck driver who initially takes her with him, only to abandon her to her grim fate. A landmark of Cinema Novo, this hybrid of documentary and fiction unfolds as a road movie, mirroring the devastation caused by neocolonial extractivist capitalism. Filmed in the Amazonas during a period of strict military control, Iracema is a raw, guerrilla-style journey into a reality that persists: displacement, deforestation, forced labor, and child prostitution.
