Storyline:  As a young man in 17th-century Italy, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio finds patronage under Cardinal Del Monte and develops a bold new style of painting that depicts the world with raw realism. His rise as an artist is shadowed by turbulent passions, as he becomes entangled in love affairs with his model Ranuccio and Ranuccio’s lover Lena. What begins as inspiration soon descends into jealousy, betrayal, and violence, pulling the painter into a world of murder and deceit that mirrors the intensity of his art.
