Storyline:  During the Great Depression in Albany, N.Y., former baseball star Francis Phelan drifts through life as an alcoholic vagrant, haunted by guilt over his infant son's death. Over several days, he moves between odd jobs, bars, and shelters, crossing paths with fellow wanderer and occasional lover Helen Archer, as they reminisce about their troubled pasts.
