Storyline:  In Yellow Earth, a Communist soldier is sent to rural China to collect uplifting folk songs for the revolution. Instead, he discovers songs filled with hardship and despair. While staying with a peasant family, he inspires young Cuiqiao with tales of women's liberation under communism. As he leaves, she longs to follow him—but her dreams may not match the harsh realities ahead.
