Storyline:  In pre-WWII Germany, a stage actor rises to fame through his acclaimed role in a Faustian play just as the Nazis seize power. While colleagues flee or are silenced, his stage persona overtakes his identity. To maintain his success, he aligns with the regime, discovering that his greatest performance is preserving appearances for his Nazi patrons.
