Altered States (1980)

In the late 1960s, Eddie Jessup, a brilliant but unconventional graduate student, experiments with isolation chambers, causing religious hallucinations despite being non-religious. Now a Harvard professor, he resumes sensory deprivation using mystical Mexican hallucinogens. Colleagues and his wife worry about the risks to his health and those around him.
