Storyline:  Luchino Visconti’s final film, based on Gabriele d'Annunzio’s The Intruder, explores aristocratic chauvinism and sexual hypocrisy in turn-of-the-century Italy. Tullio Hermil is a lustful nobleman who flaunts his mistress to his wife, only to become obsessed with her when he suspects her of infidelity, as his jealousy spirals into tragedy.
