Storyline:  Police lieutenant Nyman is murdered in his hospital bed, and Martin Beck must investigate. Nyman, a strict officer with many complaints against him, had his partner Hult as his sole ally outside family. As Beck uncovers motives, it becomes clear Nyman is not the only target: a sniper begins killing policemen from a roof in central Stockholm.
