In the opulent world of Long Island, a young man becomes enmeshed in the life of his enigmatic neighbor, a wealthy but mysterious figure known for his extravagant parties. As he uncovers the secrets behind this tycoon’s glittering façade, he is drawn into a world of lost love, deception, and unspoken desires, revealing a tale of passion and tragedy that threatens to turn on its head everything he thought he knew.
The novel is simply so good that it’s hard not to make a decent film out of it. The director uses the same theatrical style as in “Moulin Rouge!”. Some of the extravagance rather detracts from the main story, but others beautifully capture the essence of the original work. I felt genuinely moved when the closing narration quoted my favorite lines from the book.
