Storyline:  Bill McKay, a California lawyer who advocates for everyday citizens, is recruited by the Democratic Party to run for the Senate against a dominant incumbent. Allowed to campaign on his own terms, he enters the race with independence, but as his chances improve, political pressures rise and the original deal begins to shift.
