There are scenes of, and references to, domestic abuse throughout the film.

For example, family members repeatedly attempt to ascertain the sex of a woman's unborn child, intending to pressure her into having an abortion if the foetus is female; there are also verbal references to her having been forced to abort multiple pregnancies in the past.

In another scene we hear the sound of off-screen blows and cries which imply a man is beating his wife, but we are then shown that the couple are faking the beating to appease the family.

Another woman shows bruises on her face from being beaten by her husband off screen.

The film is critical of domestic abuse and features a clear message in support of the rights of women and girls.
