In an attempt to fathom his late father, filmmaker Marc Schmidt undertakes a personal quest into excess and insatiability. Together with several peers, he explores the feeling of emptiness and the ways to fill it; like the young mother who does so with daily binge eating, or the sex addict in search of the man who will be able to heal her. The ultimate confrontation with emptiness is undertaken by a sailor who crosses the Atlantic on her own. The portraits move along topical themes - deep fake, eating disorders, addiction, identity and inter-generational trauma - and in doing so deliver a hyper-personalized portrayal of a widely held sentiment in Western societies. Between the portraits, it slowly becomes clear that Marc too, like his father, knows the emptiness that lies behind excess.
