Rewind to the 1920s in Shanghai, and Chai Shap-chat (Wayne Lai) struggles to repay his debts. He is abruptly summoned by Wing Yip Bank principal Tang Kwai-sim (Nancy Wu), aka Master. Shap-chat uses his business acumen to deal with the bank run crisis. The duo have since developed an unusual employment relationship. Shap-chat has been taken care of by the Kwais, who are veterans in the restaurant business. The Kwais' daughter Kwai Fa-heung (Hera Chan) again runs into her schooldays crush Wai Ho (Joey Law). Wai Ho is actually a gangland hitman. However, Shap-chat gradually understands Wai Ho's affection for Fa-heung, so he eventually comes to terms with their romantic relationship. During these turbulent times, the war continues. Kwai-sim keeps bumping into mysterious antagonists, including military and political strong man Lam Mau-choi (Edwin Siu), who forces her, Shap-chat, Wai Ho and Fa-heung to end up on a cliff edge. And more troubles are looming.
