Having just watched the first installment of the series, I could clearly note its technological shortcomings compared to later animations. However, Ice Age is still an enduringly charming and outstanding animated work, weaving themes of warmth, friendship, unity, and environmental consciousness into narratives that resonate deeply with me, provoking laughter and tears without feeling overwrought or tiresome by the end.
Ice Age grabs the audience's attention right from the get-go, with the squirrel appearing as an engaging character throughout the series. The film's pacing is great, and its editing and score enhance the storytelling. Despite the technological limitations of its time, the use of "modular" modeling is a cleverly compensation, offering a tale that's both classic and fresh. Although the storyline portrays unrealistic scenarios and tenderly addresses themes of negative emotions, it fails to seamlessly blend both elements, which is rather anti-climatic.
I used to not understand why studios made so many sequels, when the first one was (supposedly) the best and you shouldn't "milk it". Now I have a kid and it all makes sense.
