Is A Minecraft Movie Gen Alpha’s Oppenheimer?

Saw this meme on social media and died laughing. Then IMAX’s official account actually called A Minecraft Movie “Gen Alpha’s Oppenheimer.” Anyone else think this is lowkey genius?

Let Girls be Whimsical: How the Minecraft Movie and the Entertainment Industry Fail Women

A few weeks ago, I saw the Minecraft movie at long last. Was it a good movie? No. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. I watched the movie in a local theatre with my best friend and 4 other people. It was great! We cheered every time there was an iconic line from the trailer, like “Flint and Steel”, or “I am Steve”, or even the infamous “Chicken Jockey”. (We did not throw popcorn at the screen because we a

Matthew Alan Schmidt: The female characters in this movie got shafted so hard. The writers just had them go off and play house while the boys went on the actual adventure.

I've Never Played Minecraft, But I Did See the Movie

I should be a massive Minecraft fan. I was the target age for the game when it first started to gain popularity. I remember classmates in my elementary school computer labs playing Minecraft in between rounds of CoolMathGames and Happy Wheels. I remember recess debates about the merits of Markiplier vs. CaptainSparkelz gameplay. I even remember the tie-in books that were always bestsellers at Scho

I Begrudgingly Respect The Minecraft Movie

What do you mean it’s called A Minecraft Movie? No, that doesn’t sound right at all. I’m keeping my article's title as it is… But please, don’t misunderstand me - the emphasis is definitely on “begrudgingly”. I hated A Minecraft Movie. I streamed it (ahoy, matey) at 2x speed, and even then I only got through the first 30 minutes before I was feeling so repulsed that I was certain I was going to vo

A Minecraft Movie: A Movie for Losers

Teenage boys used to be cool. Teenage boys used to be rebellious in a way that felt at least somewhat culturally valuable. They spearheaded counter-cultural activities and artistic movements, like skateboarding and punk music. This “coolness” has always been performative, but it never felt informed by a desire for attention. Now, “coolness” is synonymous with chaos, destruction, and above all else

Matthew Alan Schmidt: I truly fear the effects this phenomenon will have on the future of the theatre experience. I hate how it's becoming normalized for people to record videos on their phones during screenings, many of which with the flash turned on no-less. I'm very grateful to have been able to see this pile of garbage in a 19+ theatre where I didn't have to deal with any of this added social-media-trend bullshit.

The Minecraft Movie Is a Gloriously Stupid Trainwreck (But I Kinda Loved It)

Maybe it’s the 10mg edible and BIG glass of wine I had in the tank, but honestly? A Minecraft Movie wasn’t half bad. It probably helped that I saw this in a 19+ theatre where most people were there at least semi-ironically. It felt like most of the laughs were aimed at the movie rather than with it — though, to be fair, a surprising number of jokes actually landed (considering my expectation was t

A Minecraft Movie? Shockingly Not Bad

Look, when I heard they were actually making a Minecraft movie, I groaned out loud. Not figuratively—I literally groaned like a zombie from the game. I mean, how do you turn a game with no plot, square cows, and a character who punches trees with his bare hands into a coherent movie? It sounded like the kind of half-baked IP cash grab you'd expect to see dumped onto a streaming service and forgott

A Product Selling the Idea of Creativity: The Minecraft Movie

A Minecraft Movie (2025) is both a conceptual and creative failure—an adaptation that not only misunderstands its source material but actively works against everything that made Minecraft a digital cultural phenomenon. In translating a game defined by radical freedom and emergent creativity into a tightly scripted, studio-approved cinematic experience, the film flattens a world of infinite possibi

Minecraft, Jack Black and the Double Mandela Effect

What happens when we think something occurred but it actually didn't? The result of knowing that certain moments or facts didn't happen as we expected can give us both deep sorrow and small joys. Well, if briefly considered, this is more or less how the memory works, specifically in our childhood. For example, what we believed was a certain size—like a hallway's wall—is actually much smaller, or m

Are "Let People Have Fun!" and "It's Not That Deep" valid Movie Opinions?

I'm noticing phrases like these being used more and more anytime someone tries to criticize films (namely big blockbusters, action movies, marvel, etc.) To me, this implies that they believe that movies like that can only be fun OR well made, never both. Sinners is a recent reminder that you CAN have it all—you can make a big fun blockbuster that is also well executed, thematically layered, and completely original. It further invalidates the argument that some movies are just supposed to be ‘fun’ and not ‘good.' What do you guys think?

Lucas.: What about "you wouldn't get it"?
