"Weapons” Isn’t Saying What You Think it’a Saying

Hey guys, I'm Joey, a man who grew up spending all of his free waking hours watching videos online in the early 2000s. As you would probably expect I was a fan of sketch comedy group Whitest Kids U'Know. WKUK tapped into the edgy teen zeitgeist like no one else could. It always felt like they were one of us – where other entertainers or celebrities felt so distant (this was before they became appr

Juno Isn't the Villain in 'The Descent'

When people bring up the 2000s era of horror, there's a high chance that someone will pipe in by saying The Descent is one of the best from that decade. And they wouldn't be wrong in saying that because it most certainly is at the top. It's not only a film that shows a main cast that consists of all women, with input from the actors, has a different feeling to it, but as a story it's perfectly tol

The Enduring Palpable Misery of 'Martyrs' (2008)

There are horror films that gut the characters, but then there are horror films that carve us out like pumpkins and leave us empty. If you had to line people up and ask them if they experienced that with Martyrs (2008), you'd find most fans saying yes. The film isn't for those who are looking for a cookie cutter or very American ending to their horror film. Considering it's part of the very contro

'28 Years Later' and Projecting Expectations Onto Returning Horror Film Series or Franchises

It's incredibly generalized to say this, but the horror community can be quite unforgiving. Plenty of horror fans are passionate and champion the genre because it hasn't always been properly recognized. There's nothing wrong with being like that as a horror fan. In fact, many of us are proud fans and have no shame in saying so. However, in the case of a long awaited sequel like 28 Years Later, the

Fantasia Fest 2025: Slashers and Vintage Porn Collide in the Trashy Giallo Loving Thriller "Anything That Moves"

In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock shocked audiences by showing a toilet flush on screen for the very first time. I'm assuming a lot of those white dudes wearing suits and ties to the cinema were also enraged to see a single woman driving a car by herself. But I can't be certain. I wasn't there. It's 2025 and for the second time at Fantasia Fest this year a man receives a golden shower in the first fifteen
cinejanie: This sounds absolutely unhinged, in the best way. I love how it pushes boundaries while staying rooted in something deeply human. Will definitely try to catch it if I get the chance.

M3GAN 2.0 Is a Downgrade

“Whenever Megan isn't on screen, all the other characters should be asking, ‘Where’s Megan?'" Megan? Em-Three-Gen? Mee-gin? Regardless of how you say it, the bitch is back in a film too boring for a character as fun as our cold-blooded robo queen. To be honest, I was not a fan of the first movie. It suffered from the same issues that most films released under the Blumhouse umbrella suffer from: bl

Review: 'Push' is a Blanket Gripping Home Invasion Horror Thriller

The uttering of the words "home invasion" often sends people into a rightful state of paranoia. There's nothing supernatural about people breaking into homes with the intent to steal or harm occupants. And horror and or thriller films perfectly can sometimes capture just how human these acts are. In the case of Push, it's undoubtedly more difficult when you are 8 months pregnant and alone. Push is

What Scares You Now?

This is my question and I think that it is a fair one: what scares us now? Horror films are usually a response to the era they are made in (there's a reason why some of the best of the best were made in the 1970s and 80s, a time of fear, disillusionment, and general disappointment with certain aspects of society and the way the world was turning). I have to wonder now if we can still find that visceral sensation felt by an audience experiencing ‘Night of the Living Dead’, ‘The Exorcist’, ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, ‘Jaws’, ‘Alien’, ‘Halloween’ and so forth. So, what can still scare us now? George A. Romero Tobe Hooper Sigourney Weaver Jamie Lee Curtis Linda Blair ?

28 Years Later Will Tear Apart Your Flesh and Burrow Its Way Into Your Heart

I believe elevated horror can only go so far before it reaches its apex. Before its spirit becomes diluted by those who do not understand the message inherent within the genre and instead affix its mask onto hollow schlock. Horror doesn't need to be smart, it just needs to be affecting. But 28 Years Later achieves both and Danny Boyle once again sets the standard for what a zombie film can be. Hor

Hell is Absolutely a Teenage Girl: 'Jennifer's Body' and Its Importance as a Coming-of-Age Horror Film

In 2009 a film that would eventually become a cult classic made its theatrical debut and that film is Jennifer's Body. Despite the horrible reception it received from people who were expecting to see Megan Fox naked, Jennifer's Body has always resonated with various communities. More in particular, queer people, who may have also had the experience of being a teenage girl at the time or at one poi
Matthew Alan Schmidt: They really botched the marketing for this one when it came out. They sold it to the boys as a sleazy lesbian demon flick, but it's actually such an amazing critique of misogyny and the male gaze made for the feminists and the queers! So happy it's finally earning the cult status and recognition it deserves. Great article Vanessa!

6 Horror Films to Watch if You Like the 'Final Destination' Films

Death comes for everyone, but sometimes much sooner than anyone is prepared for. The Final Destination franchise is established as a franchise that prides itself on crazy deaths. You can go into most of those films (The Final Destination is the worst in the franchise) and enjoy yourself for the most part. But what happens when you get an itch for something similar? What horror films do you turn to
marvelousmars: I'm not a horror movie fan, but recently I've started to realise that I like to use horror elements in my writing, so I'll definitely be checking some of these out, as much as it pains me. The Final Girls sounds like the most interesting to me.

Dangerous Animals: An Allegory on Childhood Trauma, the Male Gaze, and Torture Porn

There is an unsettling magnetism in the cinema of violence—a grim allure that Dangerous Animals deftly harnesses and interrogates. This film, which surfaced prominently at Cannes and currently unsettles audiences in theaters, artfully navigates the tightrope of narrative coherence, steering clear of the trap of disjointed storytelling and gratuitous sensationalism. For most of its runtime, the mov

10 Found Footage Horror Films that You Maybe Haven't Seen

Found footage horror has many flavors, much like every other subgenre in horror. Yes, found footage doesn't work for everyone, but there are plenty of films to check out. People often recommend the more well-known found footage horror films like The Blair Witch Project, Unfriended, The Visit, and occasionally Hell House LLC (which has grown in popularity over the years). But recommending the films

‘Sinners’: Blues God vs. Celtic Vampires

The new film “Sinners” opened with a title card that read: “Clarksdale, Mississippi, October 16, 1932.” A young Black man, clutching a broken guitar with nothing left but its headstock and fretboard, walked into a makeshift shack-church where his father was leading a sermon. Holding his battered son in his arms, the father prayed, “I want you to swear to me, and before this congregation, to leave

6 Horror Films That You Might Not Know About

When it comes to horror fans, old and new, people often recommend films that are widely known in the horror fandom. But what about horror films that fly under the radar? The very films that people might not even know e

Popularity of The Gardener: A Regression of Horror Works in Spanish

The recent popularity of Netflix's new series The Gardener concerns me. Having a deep connection to Spanish language and culture, I've been profoundly inspired by how Spanish-speaking filmmakersinterpret horror. In their works, horror serves as a stepping stone toward deeper human insights instead of merely as a device to frighten audiences. This meaningful influence from Spanish language and cult

From the Vault Review: Brand New Cherry Flavor (Miniseries)

You know how people say that revenge is sweet? Well, sometimes it’s actually more bittersweet because getting what you want might come at a cost. This is precisely what the Netflix series, Brand New Cherry Flavor by Lenore Zion(and co-writer Nick Antosca ) hammers home. I’ve never read the novel of the same by Todd Grimson , but what I can say is that the TV adaptation is a twisted rollercoaster r

Beneath the Surface: Jaws and the Rituals Men Carry

A Masculinity Autopsy in Sunlight and Saltwater What are you? Some kind of half-assed astronaut? When I was young, I saw Jaws on our bootleg cable box. Like so many, it scared me out of the tub and away from the deep. But it also sparked a love for sharks and for the ocean itself. Despite my fear, I kept swimming in the cold waters off Long Island because my friends were already out there. Growing

From the Vault Review: 'Alien: Romulus'

Author's note: This is a throwback review and I've watched this film several times since I wrote this initially. After many years of no films in the Alien franchise and what folks considered to be a letdown with Alien: Covenant, a return to form was necessary. Rather than shuffle ahead into the future, we’re sent back to a timeline between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) with Alien: Romulus. Thanks

'The Last House on the Left (2009)' is an Effective Horror Remake

tw: sexual violence It’s not a stretch to say that Wes Craven’s highly controversial The Last House on the Left (1972) is a film that causes varied reactions amongst horror fans. It’s exploitative and rests in the same camp as I Spit on Your Grave as far as I’m concerned.
