Sideways Is Everything I Run From

With movie club fast approaching, I had to do my homework, which meant that Sunday night was spent watching Sideways. Turns out, this pick isn't the most relevant or youthful movie of all time, but how was I supposed to know? I'd never seen it, but I'd heard lots of good things. Plus, when I mentioned this movie to @bob_at_peliplat, his eyes lit up, which made me think that I was on to something.
GulaDaddy: Another writer navel-gazing about how writers are supposed to be depressed alcoholics? How groundbreaking. Sideways is basically porn for English majors who think suffering equals depth. Give me a happy writer character for once, Hollywood.

Dogfight in the Desert: One Jet, Six Cameras, Pure Cinema

Some films challenge us. Some films illuminate universal truths of humanity. Some films provoke deep and profound introspection. Some films just fucking rip. Top Gun: Maverick wasn’t supposed to be this good. It was a sequel nobody asked for, to a Reagan-era Navy-recruitment video best remembered for volleyball and homoerotic undertones buried under a Kenny Loggins synth line and gated drumbeat. I

The acting, the feeling, the colors, the Fantastic-ness of it all. Did the MCU finally make the F4 movie we deserve?

Well, well, well, what do we have here? Did they finally do it? Did the MCU finally get it right? Did we finally get the Fantastic 4 film that Marvel fans have been clamoring for? After 4 dismal attempts at making a significant splash with this super group, director Matt Shakman (WandaVision, Succession, The Boys) and this group of superstars finally did the damn thing. I've learned to temper my e

Fantastic Four: First Steps is EVERYTHING I wanted from Marvel

It must be hard to reinvent yourself… There’s a beautiful line of dialogue in Forrest Gump—delivered by Tom Hanks while he runs and thinking about his beloved mother—that says, “You have to put the past behind you before you can move on.” Sometimes I think about that, and I find myself overwhelmed by feelings and emotions I can’t even explain. But what does it truly mean to reinvent yourself? Is i

Amélie: The French Film That Taught Me to See the World Differently

There are few moments in life when a film doesn't just entertain you, it changes you. Amélie, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, did that for me. It came to me at a time when I didn’t even know I needed it. A film that doesn’t speak my native language, that doesn’t rely on explosions or plot twists, that doesn’t feature world-famous actors, yet managed to speak directly to my heart with the subtle, b

Barbie and the Gaslighting Island

I’m a broke girl in a billionaire’s world, so I’ll be spending my summer rewatching Barbie as the Island Princess on a shady pirating site because even my family’s Netflix account ghosted me. I never really vibed with Barbie as the Island Princess as a kid. I think I only watched it, like, two times —compared to every other Barbie movie from that era, which I’d seen at least ten times each. But re

THE FLORIDA PROJECT AND THE CHILDHOOD SUMMER VACATION MEMORIES

• I. Introduction: Our summer memories often glow with a vivid, almost dreamlike beauty, painted in the vibrant hues of endless days and unbridled freedom. The Florida Project masterfully captures this nostalgic glow, even while simultaneously subverting typical happy endings. We are immersed in the world of six-year-old Moonee, who lives with her young mother in a pastel-hued motel directly in th

Value Investing in Materialists

One of the big themes in Materialists is the value we put on relationships. This is crystallized in the scene where Lucy (Dakota Johnson) comforts a scared bride. What Lucy makes clear to the bride is that she loves her soon-to-be husband because her sister's jealousy of their relationship makes her feel valued. It's not that her husband provides her with material things, but that his very existen

Zombie Cinema Isn't Dead, but Cinema Etiquette Might Be

There’s something deeply ironic about watching a movie like 28 Years Later — a movie about the decayed remnants of civil society and the long-term effects of post-apocalyptic upbringing — surrounded by people who behave like they were raised in a bunker by an iPad and a sack of Hi-chew. And look, I’m not some purist who thinks movie theaters need to be as silent as a confessional — I love a rowdy

The Unbearable Weight of Un-CAGE-d Rage

POV: You’re watching a movie. Starring is the actor who’s delighted you with some of his most ridiculous, meme-worthy moments over the past five years. A man born in the very heart of Hollywood. In this film you’re watching, there’s a rather close-up shot of his face, where the camera zooms in (yes, the famous camera move Kubrick immortalized with his “Kubrick stare”), possibly including his shoul
marvelousmars: I'm so glad you wrote about this movie!!! It was such an amazing watch, and I 100% agree that it'll become a cult classic sooner or later, even if the ending was a little bit disappointing (thank god I'm not the only one who thought so). This analysis is so different from mine because, well, mine was a rewriting while your offers a more philosophical and psychological view, but that's why I love it! It offered a new perspective on the film. Thank you for writing this!

I liked Snow White (2025), and no...I'm not joking! 🍎🗡️

"Beauty does not make happy the one who possesses it , but the one who can love it" - Hermann Hesse Hate is a wildfire in the soul, destroying everything in its path. Since it was announced in 2021 that Rachel Zegler would be Snow White, the internet exploded. I know this perfectly well because I witnessed it for four long years. It wasn’t easy to read the amount of racist and classist comments fr
Ishika Banerjee: People just love to hate on anything because it gives them some weird innate sense of power. They think they know and understand everything about show biz and act like they could even think about producing a film. Though I didn't agree with a lot of things the cast said during the press release its actually weird how invested people get over stuff like this. its a remake of a disney movie, not a global science project to land people in mars. Get over it and dont watch it if you dont like it. Thanks for sharing!

The New Core Emotion Who Stole The Spotlight: Anxiety in Inside Out 2

A supporting character who I think took the centre stage and taught the audiences an important lesson is Anxiety from Inside Out 2, voiced Maya Hawke. Craig Waterman Did Nothing Wrong

I know a lot of people will go watch Friendship and wonder why Craig Waterman (Tim Robinson) acts so strange, but those people don't understand male bonding. It is not as simple as becoming friends over a common interest. It is a chess match of two lone wolfs who must outwit the other, win the other's respect, and, through that respect, acceptance, and through that acceptance, friendship. What I s

In 2013, Ryan Coogler debuted with his first film, Fruitvale Station, an acclaimed independent movie about the struggles of a young African-American citizen, based on real-life events. In the next 12 years, he's directed 4 movies, like Black Panther and Creed, always working alongside Michael B. Jordan to tell stories about the African-American community. The Shrouds of Cronenberg's Canada

Canadian identity is membranous. Our stereotype is one of moose-riding, hockey-playing, syrup-loving lumberjacks, although I have yet to meet someone who meets all of these criteria. In reality, our quintessential painters, Emily Carr and Maud Lewis and the Group of Seven, fixate on nature, and I agree that Canadians have a whole-hearted relationship with the land. In our literature, Margaret Atwo
gigi is punk: Great article! I already added The Shrouds to my watchlist. Speaking of Canadian directors, my favorite director of all time is Xavier Dolan! If you're not familiar with his filmography, I would totally recommend it! He's a genius and his movies are real pieces of art. One of his movies, "It's Only the End of the World" is also starred by Vincent Casssel!

Looking for inspiration? Watch Love, Death & Robots

I had never completely understood the general concept of Tim Miller's series. Love, death and robots? What's that? A simple combination of random words connected by the mere desire to lure the audience? It was as if, despite falling more and more in love with this series as time went by, something was always missing for me, feeling like someone should have approached me to tell me "this is it dude

THUNDERBOLTS*: Marvel Studios' Past, Present and Future

For a while now, I have stopped believing in superhero stories. Well, actually, "believe" is an extremely strong verb. I would rather say they haven't convinced me for some time. Not for nothing my favorite movie of all time is Taxi Driver. I relate more to these kinds of broken characters, with a grey morality… a bit more real. I was exactly 20 years old when the first installment of The Avengers

I remember the "shock and awe" beginning, where night-vision footage
