White Rappers Through the Lens of Cinema

It's me, the resident white boy. This month, three things happened that have turned the rap world upside down: Drake returned with "What Did I Miss?" Clipse dropped their first album in a really long time ian's XXL freshman freestyle I bet you can guess which one I want to talk about. (And, yeah, I know Tyler dropped yesterday... So there was that too!) In one minute and 43 seconds, ian set the in

The Backrooms: A Terrifying, Liminal Paradigm Shift

Have you ever thought about what's underneath the ground we step on daily, what secrets are being kept from us, what the possibilities would be and what could be hiding there? Since I was pretty young, I have always had a great curiosity about the spaces out of our most immediate reach, about the unknown and also about the eerily known. For a few days now, a part of this eagerness to want to know

Sometimes, Marketing Is Way More Fun Than the Film Itself

Let’s talk about marketing. Specifically, Smile 2. Not too long ago, Paramount kicked things off with a bit of a twist: they released the first seven minutes of the movie online—but here’s the catch—you can only watch it if your webcam detects that you’re smiling the entire time. Yes, you read that right. Smiling. Non-stop. At a horror movie. I don’t know about you, but I had to pause for a second

Men and Chocolates, Fk Off!

Valentine’s Day is a capitalist farce—plain and simple. Every year, like clockwork, we’re flooded with ads selling us this idea that love can be bought. And the biggest, most hypocritical symbol of this is chocolate. Don’t get me wrong, chocolate’s great, but it’s been co-opted by an industry that’s more about reinforcing outdated gender norms than actually celebrating anything real. The history o

The Nanny: A World I Never Want to Leave

Between the witty banter of Niles and C.C.’s fiery romance, a stunning Manhattan townhouse, a fabulous nanny with a designer wardrobe, and a charming Broadway producer—The Nanny is, without a doubt, the world I’d love to live in forever. The show gives us a unique glimpse of New York City from different social perspectives. At its heart, it tells the story of an ordinary woman—a modern-day Cindere

Obama's Annual Movies List Feels More Like a Joke

Every year, Barack Obama shares his personal top ten favorite movies, and while this might seem like a great opportunity to glimpse his cinematic taste, the list often feels more like a carefully curated image exercise than a celebration of genuine filmmaking. Movies like The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024) and The Piano Lesson (2024) seem less about their artistic value and more about ticking off s

Saturday at the Vancouver Fan Expo

This past weekend was the Vancouver Fan Expo. Thousands of fans of countless shows, games and movies descended on the Vancouver Convention Centre. Waiting for them beyond the glass doors were vendors, celebrities and musicians, all ready to give the fans an experience of a lifetime. I was there on Saturday, working at the Peliplat booth. Our goal was to try and bring new users to our English site.

25 reasons to love Zack Snyder's 300

What's a guilty pleasure? Who determines what's good or bad? Personally, I don't let myself get carried away by others' opinions. I experienced it recently with Anora, Sean Baker's new movie everyone around the world is praising. As a fan of his cinema, I could have easily gotten carried away by everyone, but I simply didn't connect with it. I'm not that kind of fan who glorifies with anticipation
