The Clichés of Good Will Hunting, and Why They Work

I just watched Good Will Hunting again, and it is a confirmed classic. First released in 1997, the film stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Robin Williams. It is directed by Gus Van Sant (Elephant, Milk). The film was made on a budget of $10 million and became a box office smash, bringing in over $225 million. Good Will Hunting is the type of movie you’d love to hate. It is chalk-full of clichés; a

Mogambo is a Problematic Classic

Mogambo is a 1953 MGM film directed by John Ford. It stars Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly. The screenplay was written by John Lee Mahin and is based on a Wilson Collison play. The film is a remake of Red Dust, a 1932 film that also starred Gable. Is Poor Things a Classic?

Poor Things is a 2023 Searchlight Pictures movie directed by Yorgos Lanthimos on a script by Tony McNamara, which is based on a novel by Alasdair Gray. Yorgos has directed other movies like The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Favourite, which starred Emma Stone. McNamara also wrote The Favourite and Cruella, both of which starred Stone. Gray was a Scottish writer whose style has been

Ishika Banerjee: It might be a classic couple years down the line as an avant garde absurdist work of art. I find it too early and controversial at the moment o be considered one. I think killing of sacred deer or The lobster might be.

Beyond the Oscars: The Unspoken Layers of Crash vs. Brokeback Mountain

The 2006 Academy Awards brought us one of the most debated and controversial wins in recent history: Crash over Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture. On the surface, this might seem like a minor decision, but a deeper look into both films raises serious questions about the nature of awards, the politics of representation, and the power of social cinema. While Brokeback Mountain is lauded for its co

A Different Man Made Me Feel Like A Loser

Movies need to relax. I literally just want to watch a motion picture in my apartment and forget about the world for an hour or two or three. I don't need the constant reminder that I'm not living my best life. Let me explain. But first, let me just say that Sea Bass Stan is so freaking back! He did the most in 2024 and I'm so here for it. Who else got a Golden Globe nomination and an Oscar nomina

Oscars Are "Moving Away" From Original Song Performances and I'm Devestated

“In a break from tradition, the original song category will forgo live performances of the nominated songs — a staple of Oscars ceremonies past. Instead, the show will spotlight the songwriters through personal reflections and behind-the-scenes insights from the creative teams behind the music.” – Variety I hate this news. The performances of original song at the Oscars are a highlight of the show! Who could forget last year's performance of “I'm Just Ken”? Why are they doing this?? I want to see Timmy sing his Dylan! I guess he's doing that on SNL… but still! Gutted by this. What are your thoughts? Sound off in the comments below. I'm gonna go cry.

marvelousmars: This is kind of tragic. I'm interested in the behind-the-scenes, sure, but the Oscars are first and foremost a show. Hell, the only reason I watch the Oscars and the Tonys is for their entertainment value - I *need* the comedy and campy performances to care.

What's the Best Movie to Ever Win Best Picture?

We are in the heat of Oscar season and it has me wondering: What's the best movie to ever win best picture? I made a list of all the winners, so you don't have to. You can find it here: https://www.peliplat.com/en/list/collection/10071697/academy-award-for-best-picture-winners When I look at this list, three movies stand out as the best: The Godfather, Rocky, No Country For Old Men. There are a lot of great ones though. I wonder, what do you think is the best movie (or top 3) to ever win best picture?

Oscar Moments That Keep Me Up at Night

Is it just me or is this the longest Oscar season of all time? From Chalamet's never-ending A Complete Unknown press tour, to everything that is Emilia Pérez, to the continuing discourse around Anora, it feels like this year's Academy Awards is the buzziest award show in a long time. The Oscars ceremony often drags on for hours, with the ratio of unforgettable moments to dull ones roughly 1:1000 i

Is The Shawshank Redemption the Best Film to Never Win an Oscar?

Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! The words that likely echoed inside Andy Dufresne's head when he was convicted of murder. How? How? How? These are the words that echo through my head when I remember that this classic film never won a single Oscar. With the 97th Oscars upcoming and nominations announced last week, it is time to look back at what I would say is the best film that failed to capture a single

The Trailer for The Smashing Machine is Here!

The first trailer for A24's new feature, The Smashing Machine, has hit the web. This highly anticipated movie stars Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Emily Blunt, and it was written and directed by Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems). From the looks of it, this is The Rock's push to get an Oscar nomination. The trailer looks pretty good. It's giving The Wrestler meets Goodfellas, or something. Emily Blunt is in the push-uppiest of push-up bras, and Dwayne has a full head of hair. Not much is given about the story, but the look of the movie is cool enough. It looks like a lot of it is set in Japan. Check out the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRpnP3LZ99g&t=1s What do you think? Does the trailer sell you? Will you go see this movie?
