Who is Mystique? She is whoever she wants to be.

Her superpowers are not the strongest, but perhaps the most desired. Some say she is the most dissolute woman in the X-Men series, with Professor X, Magneto, Beast and Wolverine, all related.
If you also have the ability of Mystique, believe in yourself, you can also be debauched, in fact, her emotional experience, more complex than this, want to know the life story of the anti-hero Mystique?
Mystique, whose real name is Raven Darkholme, has said that it is the name of the slave, believing that Mystique is her real name.

She can change her cell and tissue structure at will, changing to look like anyone, including irises, fingerprints, skin texture, voice, gender characteristics, and even the clothes and accessories on the body. She can change the position of her body organs to avoid fatal injuries in times of crisis. She can also slow down aging, so she doesn't even look like the same age when she's standing with older Professor X and Magneto.

In 1944, 'Young' Mystique came to Professor X's ancestral home, transformed into the appearance of his mother and tried to find some food to fill her stomach.

But Professor X saw through her true identity, and both were surprised that they were not alone in this world. For the first time, Mystique felt at home, while her real parents wanted to kill her because she is a mutant. Soon, Mystique and Professor X were inseparable, and their relationship was like both love and kinship.

In 1962, Mystique followed Professor X, to the special organization that accommodates mutants, and also met Beast and Magneto and other mutants. In fact, she was very concerned about her real appearance. After all, she is a blue monster. With the same concern about appearance, Beast developed a potion, that can change the appearance, wanted to inject it with Mystique.
But Magneto persuaded her to accept herself. From then on, she was caught in a whirlpool of three men's relationships. Beast fell in love with her at first sight, but she had a hard time deciding between Professor X and Magneto.

At this time, there was a mutant named Sean, trying to provoke a war between humans. He wanted to destroy the human race and wished mutants to unify the world. Mystique and other mutants trained together to fight Sean.

But when humans saw the powerful abilities of mutants, it triggered a war between humans and mutants. Ultimately, Magneto killed Sean, but set up a "Brotherhood of Mutants", on the opposite side of the human race.
Professor X, on the other hand, stood on the human side, or more precisely, sat on the human side, because his spine was mistakenly injured by Magneto, forever seating him in a wheelchair. In between humans and mutants, Professor X and Magneto, Mystique chose mutants and Magneto. She joined the "Brotherhood", and went far away with Magneto. Parting with Professor X, she said: mutated and proud.
In 1963, Magneto was arrested and imprisoned on suspicion of murdering JFK, and imprisoned for a decade. All the while, Mystique did not stop fighting for mutants. During the Vietnam War, she slipped into the laboratory persecuting mutants and found a radical named Trask, who had been dissecting mutants for research, including Mystique’s former comrades.

Trask had been committed to the study of mutants, and began to develop weapons specifically aimed to restrain mutants: Sentinels. Due to the time travel in "Days of Future Past", from here on out the X-Men series would be derived from two different timelines. One is the old X-Men trilogy timeline. Another is a new version of the X-Men quadrilogy timeline. Now let's start with the first timeline.
The First Timeline
In 1973, after learning of Trask's purpose, Mystique intended to assassinate him and defend the fate of the mutants. She had never killed anyone before Trask, and this one assassination changed everything.
Originally, humans did not really consider mutants as a threat. The "Sentinels Program" was not on the agenda. But after Mystique killed Trask, humans soon began to implement the "Sentinels Program". Mystique was captured alive, brutally tortured and experimented. Humans used her DNA and ability to apply to the Sentinels, turned them into a real terrible weapon torestrain mutants.
This incident made Mystique really recognize the evil of human nature. From then on, the once Raven had no longer existed. She really became Mystique, dedicated to assist Magneto, became the right-hand person of his mutant revival.
"X-Men"
In 2000, the Brotherhood of Mutants invented a device that could mutate ordinary people into mutants. Magneto attempted to use this device to completely change the world landscape. Mystique disguised as a council staff, capturing the councilor who opposed mutants and making him the first victim of the mutation device. But this device needed to be driven by Magneto himself, which almost killed him.
So Magneto needed Rogue to absorb the superpowers of others and replace him to drive the device. Naturally, Mystique found Rogue, and she also expected that after the disappearance of Rogue, Professor X would definitely use Cerebro to find the whereabouts of Rogue. Thus, the toxin was implanted in Cerebro in advance, causing Professor X to be infected and unconscious.
After the councilor mutated, he sought the X-Men for help, but turned into a jellyfish man and eventually turned into a puddle of seawater. After Rogue was captured, Magneto's mutation plan began to implement. The X-Men came to stop him but Mystique had long been disguised as a Statue of Liberty waiting for them.

Then she disguised as Wolverine, provoking an imminent war between real and fake Wolverine. She also wanted to disguise as Storm and attacked Wolverine, but unfortunately was recognized and suffered a claw into the abdomen.

Of course, Mystique did not die. She can change the position of organs to avoid fatal injuries. Once the X-Men were about to stop Magneto's mutation plan, Mystique disguised as a local security guard, and managed to get away.
"X2"
Afterwards, she disguised as the councilor who used to oppose mutants, and publicly announced a "support the freedom rights of mutants" proposition, for the rights of mutants. While Magneto, after the failure of the plan, was locked in a tailor-made plastic prison for him.

Mystique disguised as a call girl, seduced the prison guard and gave him a special injection, which added a trace of metal substances. After the guard woke up, he didn't notice anything different and delivered meals to Magneto as usual. The metal substances in the body could just pass the inspection of the machine.
Magneto soon sensed the change in the guard's body, refining the metal elements into a weapon to get away. In this episode, however, the Brotherhood and the X-Men must join forces to deal with a new enemy: Stryker, whose son though also a mutant, is an anti-mutant military scientist whose masterpiece was project X which transformed Wolverine.

Stryker captured Professor X. Under a dam, he prepared to let Professor X use Cerebro to find and kill all the mutants, and his son, who can put others into hallucinations, even Professor X was confused. When discussing how to save Professor X, Mystique disguised as Jean Grey and made out with Wolverine.

In order to sneak into the dam, Mystique disguised as Wolverine, pretending to be arrested. After entering the base, she turned into Stryker's appearance and opened the door for the others.

Under the illusion, Professor X located all the mutants and began to destroy their brains. Fortunately, Magneto had a helmet to protect his brain and stopped Professor X. But Magneto also had his own plan. He wanted Mystique to turn into Stryker's appearance and told Stryker's son to confuse Professor X to turn the target into all humans.

Seeing that the mutant revival plan was about to be realized, Storm arrived in time to use her superpower to quickly lower the temperature and destroy Magneto's plan.
Then later, humans created a kind of antidote that can make mutants return to ordinary people. Mystique investigated and found that the source of the antidote was a mutant child who can make mutants lose their abilities.
During the lurk process, Mystique was arrested. Magneto came to rescue her, but the guards were equipped with the antidotes, shooting at Magneto. Mystique got in front of Magneto's body. After being shot, the blue skin on her body began to slowly fade, from a blue monster, into a human look.

But in Magneto's eyes, Mystique was no longer the same. He did not linger and turned away. Abandoned by Magneto, Mystique betrayed Magneto's information to the government. Since then, the old trilogy of the story of Mystique came to an end.
The Second Timeline
In 1973, just before Mystique was about to assassinate Trask, Wolverine found the three men in her life and together went to stop her from assassinating Trask. However, Magneto wanted to kill Mystique for the fate of mutants, and thanks to the interference of Beast, she didn't die.

As humans had seen the horror of mutants, the "Sentinels Program" was approved for production. So Magneto used and controlled the Sentinels to aim at humans. Professor X, Beast, and Wolverine tried to stop him, but were no match.
Seeing that the conflict between humans and mutants was about to be completely intensified, Mystique turned into the appearance of U.S. President Nixon. She deceived Magneto for gaining time for Professor X to control Magneto, successfully turned danger into safety.

Mystique originally had the opportunity to kill Trask, but she finally chose to let go of hatred, giving humans and mutants a chance to start over and rewrite history. Since then, Mystique continued to fight for the liberation of mutants, but also incidentally rescued Wolverine and Nightcrawler.
When news of the murder of Magneto's family had reached Mystique, she and Nightcrawler sought Professor X for help, only to attract the attention of the world's first mutant – Apocalypse. What Mystique didn't know was, Magneto had become one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Professor X's ability was exactly what Apocalypse always wanted. He wanted Professor X to be the target of his next reincarnation, so that he would have the ability to control and become everyone. At this time, Stryker also found the X Academy, and captured Mystique and others.
The young mutants secretly infiltrated Stryker's base and rescued them. Apocalypse's goal was the whole world, and at the time of danger, it was again Mystique who stood out. She led the young X-Men to challenge Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen.
Magneto's son was also in the team. Later, Magneto came to his senses and realized that he betrayed his family. Eventually, Apocalypse was defeated by the awakening Phoenix Force of Jean Grey. Mystique did not follow Magneto, but chose to stay at X Academy and continued to train the new X-Men.
Under the efforts of the X-Men, the relationship between mutants and humans was gradually getting better. But in a space rescue mission, Jean Grey was hit by an unknown force in order to save the others.

Her Phoenix Force began to erupt. Mystique tried to persuade her, but Jean Grey simply couldn't control her own power and accidentally killed Mystique. I originally thought that the accident was only a small episode in the life of Mystique. To my surprise, this was the end of her life. This was how Mystique finished her contradictory life on the big screen.

Mystique in the Comics

There are many differences between the films and the comics. Mystique and Magneto in the comics did not have much relationship. Rogue was her adopted daughter. She had been tempted by the Red Devil and gave birth to Nightcrawler. She also had a mortal son with Sabretooth, but her son joined the anti-mutant movement, was killed by her own hands.

In the comics, Mystique went through rich emotional experiences. But her true love, in fact, was an old woman called Destiny. After all, she has the ability to change at will. So bisexuality is not surprising, right?

Whether in the films or the comics, the life of Mystique consists of betrayal and being betrayed, ultimately creating such an anti-hero who is neither a heroine, nor a villain.
