Let's Have a Brainstorm About The Details in Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum

Spoilers

I'm very interested in understanding what exactly happened to Kun Chi-yan after watching the movie. However, it seems that there are fewer analytical discussions in the film reviews. So, I came up with a few speculations of my own, just for entertainment purposes.

  1. President Park Young-ae is Park Geun-hye.

Previously, I found the photos of the dean playing basketball somewhat staged, and when I compared their surnames, it became quite plausible that the dean represents Park Geun-hye.

This led me to recall the previous news about Park Geun-hye's alleged involvement in a cult. Upon further investigation, I discovered some intriguing information.

In the film, Kun Chi-yan Psychiatric Hospital received the National Best Psychiatric Hospital Award in 1978, which was during the 1970s. The film mentions that Kun Chi-yan made "contributions" in educating political prisoners, spies, and murderers. When I searched on Baidu, I found that during the Park Chung-hee era, the North Korean government implemented authoritarian rule, with Park Chung-hee even being characterized as a dictator. They established secret agencies to monitor the actions of the people. In such a context, how would political prisoners, spies, and murderers be treated?

However, the word "educating" is particularly interesting.

It seems to imply a transformation on a psychological level. When combined with the allegations of Park Geun-hye's involvement in a cult, the appearance of the high school girl in the film appears to be more than just a coincidence.

The film indicates that there were many people who came to explore Kun Chi-yan, and some of them had even been through Room 402. But the only clear identities depicted in the film, apart from the patients and the suspected dean, are the high school girl.

The high school girl surrounded by water brings to mind the previous Sewol ferry incident related to cult activities in South Korea (specific details can be searched). This incident was the most severe case of alleged cult involvement during Park Geun-hye's presidency, and the sinking of the Sewol ferry happened on the anniversary of Choi Soon-sil's father's death.

Moreover, it's interesting to note that a similar ferry incident occurred during the Park Chung-hee era, which was also caused by human error and inadequate government rescue efforts, resulting in the death of 159 people. At the time, some people suspected the cause of the incident, but due to Park Chung-hee's dictatorship, public opinion was suppressed.

If these implications are true, then the collective suicide of the patients may not be as simple as just live experiments. Could the large-scale collective deaths be a form of ritual? The date of the Sewol ferry incident coincided with Choi Soon-sil's father's death anniversary, giving rise to the notion of "sacrifice for resurrection." Interestingly, the collective death at Kun Chi-yan in 1979, October 26th, was also the anniversary of Park Chung-hee's death!

Another point related to the Eternal Life Sect is the circular bathtub in the bathroom. When the ghost truly appears later on, the camera captures it emerging from this circular bathtub.

The ghost coming out of the circular bathtub.

On the same day, Gyeonggi-do Seongnam City Mayor Lee Jae-myung made a statement on social media, saying, "The soul of Choi Tae-min, who borrowed Park Geun-hye's body, is ruling over the Republic of Korea." I won't go into the details of the stories involving Park Geun-hye and Choi Tae-min. If you're interested, you can search for them yourself.
