The real story behind "Secrets of a Scandal" remains controversial to this day. Discover what transpired in the life of Mary Kay Letourneau and how her story served as the inspiration for the movie.

May December: true story

The movie May December is inspired by the life of Mary Kay Letourneau, a 36-year-old woman who groomed and raped a 13-year-old pre-teen in 1997. At the time, she was a teacher at Villi Fualaau, and the case resulted in Letourneau's arrest and six years in jail.

Mary Kay never admitted to committing a crime, so much so that she remained in a relationship with Villi and they even got married. The marriage lasted 12 years, with the divorce taking place in 2017, and together they had two daughters. Mary died in 2020 at the age of 58.

In the midst of all the scandal, none of those involved treated the relationship as a crime, neither the abuser nor the victim. In television interviews, the couple made bizarre statements, especially Mary, when they were asked by reporters about their age difference.

When Mary met Villi, he was just a child and she was already married with four children, as well as being a respected teacher. Mary said it all started because he was stalking her, and she had only consented to the affair. At first, the relationship was kept secret, until everything came to light.

How is the case portrayed in May December?

Since it's about a sexual crime against a minor, May December doesn't show the story in the past, how it all happened, but tells it from Elizabeth's interaction with the family.

Throughout the plot, she tries to absorb the characteristics of the character she is going to play, while witnessing the family's routine. Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore deliver a master class in acting in an intense and layered film.
