This movie is like a sugar-free, zero-calorie cola on a summer day: satisfying without being overindulgent. The film is light-hearted and tells the story of a man pretending to be a hitman. Similar to the style of "Fargo," it carries the Coen brothers' flair, depicting how an ordinary person's decision to change their life leads to a series of uncontrollable events. Director Richard Linklater emphasizes the characters' ordinariness to highlight the absurdity, placing an everyday teacher in an unprecedented situation. This not only evokes laughter but also provokes thought, which is key to the film’s success. However, because of this, Linklater focuses on maintaining a light atmosphere and doesn't delve deeply into Gary's character.
Still, the movie's charm is enough to drive the plot forward. Glen Powell and Adria Arjona, the two main actors, are not only attractive but also have sizzling chemistry. Whenever they flirt on screen, the film truly comes to life.
Since starring in "Top Gun: Maverick," Glen Powell has become a lucky charm! Movies continue to be box office hits, with "Top Gun: Maverick" breaking records and even the lighthearted romantic comedy "Set It Up" achieving unprecedented success. His upcoming Netflix action comedy, "Hit Man," is already creating a buzz. Directed by Richard Linklater of the "Before Trilogy," the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, receiving rave reviews and high anticipation.
Gary is remarkably good at posing as a hitman. He slips into the role effortlessly, which raises the question: who is Gary, really? "How well do you know yourself?" we hear Gary ask his students, and he may as well be asking himself. The film doesn't have much room to psychoanalyze Gary as a character, as its tone is too light and fluffy.
Based on a True Story of a Legendary Undercover Cop
"Hit Man" is adapted from a true story published in Texas Monthly by journalist Skip Hollandsworth. It tells the story of a cop who consistently works undercover and becomes Houston's most sought-after hitman. Strangely, one day, he violates protocol and falls in love with a female client.
Gary is a philosophy professor who assists the police in his spare time. When the police's undercover agent posing as a hitman is suspended for misconduct, Gary, who resembles the agent, is invited to take over the role. Gary excels at pretending to be a hitman, making the undercover operation progress smoothly. However, when the beautiful and charming Maddy approaches him to hire him to kill her abusive boyfriend, the two unexpectedly fall in love.
Yet, Gary believes Maddy wouldn't love his true self (the professor), leading to an inner struggle with his dual identity.
Don't underestimate Glen Powell, thinking he only flaunts his physique in action films or sells sex appeal in comedies. In fact, Powell is credited as a writer and producer for "Hit Man," alongside the director. So, if "Hit Man" becomes a huge hit, Powell deserves credit both in front of and behind the camera.
Netflix Acquisition
"Hit Man" was completed in November 2022, but its release method remained undecided until its premieres at the 2023 Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, where it received outstanding audience feedback. With a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an average score of 8.4/10, and an 82 score on MTC, the market buzzed with excitement. Ultimately, Netflix offered $20 million for the distribution rights, marking the largest deal at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
For an action comedy without major stars, this is a tremendous success. Netflix's significant investment in "Hit Man" is not only due to the positive audience reception but also because of the director, Richard Linklater. Known for his iconic "Before Trilogy" ("Before Sunrise," "Before Sunset," "Before Midnight"), Linklater's return to directing an action film after 25 years, especially one with a romantic twist, has attracted a substantial fanbase.
