LOVE can be HELL: Companion

Companion is the feature film debut of Drew Hancock, it is written and directed by him and stars Sophie Thatcher, who continues his sci-fi genre films and in it the death of a billionaire sets off a series of events for Iris and her friends during a weekend trip to his Lakeside estate that the plot hides quite a bit if you’ve seen the trailer for this movie you know more than that, the trailer definitely hints at some things that I hadn’t seen in the trailer, so I will say that I was the perfect audience member for this movie as I went in knowing literally nothing, I had no idea what this movie was about so I was prepared for the surprise at every turn, so if you liked it too and you don’t necessarily know the central idea behind this movie I’m going to talk about that but it’s not really a SPOILER but if you’re like me and you like to know as little as possible I’ll just let you know right off the bat.

I'm going to talk about some things that happened very early in the movie, but if you've seen the trailer, it shouldn't be a problem for you. For the first 10 or 15 minutes of the movie, Jack Quaid's character, Josh, talks to Sophie Thatcher's character, Iris, in a very strange way and I found it very off-putting and I was like, "This guy is like a really bad boyfriend. Why is he acting like this? He's so weird and weirdly controlling and he's just telling her to do all these things in very specific ways." And then we find out that she is a robot designed for romantic purposes and can be controlled if needed, but if her settings are altered and in the right way, she could become quite unhinged and do some things that her model shouldn't do, but that's not really what this movie is about, it's not about a rogue AI, we've seen a lot of movies like that, a recent movie called Subservience with Megan Fox followed a similar plot, Companion is very different, not only is it extremely funny, this movie is more about a robot realizing that she is a robot and that she would like to be something else and that self-control would be a really good thing, but without going into it too much. She also realizes that she has become an unwitting pawn and this master plan that is being orchestrated.

I loved this movie!

This movie shines in so many ways, the editing is fantastic, the jokes are edited and timed perfectly, the reaction shots especially. There's so much information withheld and you're set in this world and you think you understand how it works and you don't. It's a clever way of having essentially what you expect to see in a genre film which is these young people going into an isolated area and then bad things happen, but because we're so denied what the world around them is we don't know what kind of technology they have, we don't understand how this world works because we're only seeing a very small part of it which allows for a lot of surprises.

The performances are fantastic, Sophie Tatcher once again is really one of my favorite actresses working today, she's doing really great things after Heretic, she was also really good in The Boogeyman, I think this is my favorite of those performances because this character is so rich that she gets to go to so many different places, places I don't want to get into, but as soon as you get into her setting, the things that she's able to do not only as a movie, but as a performer, I was really impressed.

Jack Quaid is also very good, he's essentially playing the biggest loser on earth, not only does he need a companion robot to make things work, if you know what I mean, but his companion robot doesn't even really want him.

The movie is also very clever. Thatcher's character, Iris, obviously an anagram of Siri, gets a lot of opportunities to show off some really cool wit that not only makes for some very comedic moments, but also some exceptionally exciting moments. Not only is this movie very funny and not only is it good at sanitizing the way we look at electronic devices or the way we treat our electronic devices or the way our electronic devices can look at us, but it's also really great in the thrill department. There are a handful of sequences in the movie that build up to some fantastic releases.

Knowing as little as possible about Companion will make it the best experience for you. I had a blast with this movie, I really loved it.
