I can’t believe I let this Netflix gem slip past me when it first came out, but after finally watching The Pale Blue Eye, I have to say: What a macabre and poetic surprise, an omen to imminent death.
A Murder Wrapped in a Poem
Set in the icy, desolate world of 1830s West Point, The Pale Blue Eye follows the detective Augustus Landor (played by Christian Bale) as he investigates the mysterious murder of a cadet. Among the soldiers, one stands out: a peculiar young man with an interest for poetry, a fascination with the occult, and a creative sharp mind.
His name? Edgar Allan Poe, played by Harry Melling

The Raven
If you’re a fan of Poe, this film is filled with wink-wink moments that will make you go like this:

From its atmospheric storytelling to direct references to Poe’s works, it feels like a puzzle designed for literary lovers. One of the strongest nods is to The Tell-Tale Heart poem, with its themes of obsession, guilt, and the inescapable weight of one’s sins. The title itself, The Pale Blue Eye is a smart nod to the old man’s “vulture eye” in the story, which drove the narrator to madness.
Beyond the obvious references…
The Pale Blue Eye gives us a glimpse into Poe’s real-life struggles. His time at West Point is historically accurate (I later found out he truly was a cadet before being expelled) and the film cleverly imagines how his experiences there might have shaped his descent into the world of Gothic horror.

Performances That Haunt You
Let’s talk about Christian Bale:
Unsurprisingly He knows how to play detective…

He plays the sad man with quiet grief, haunted by his past and drawn into Poe’s strange orbit.
But the real standout here? Well… Harry Melling.
Melling’s Poe was a revelation for me. His version of Poe is lively, eccentric, and rich with poetic passion.
Watching Melling and Bale together:
Its giving me like Gothic Sherlock Holmes and Watson,
Its giving me like Don Quijote & Sancho Panza.
Its giving me like Batman and Robin.

Final Verdict:
My first question was: is The Pale Blue Eye based on a true story? I later found out that ITS NOT!…

But…..it doesn’t need to be.
It’s a rich blend of fiction and historical inspiration, offering an intriguing murder mystery wrapped in the dark and poetic multiverse of Edgar Allan Poe.
If you enjoy detective thrillers, period dramas, or anything that breathes Poe, this film is a must-watch.
