Biography

"I'm not dangerous, but I have a sharp nose. I'll probably play bad guys forever because of my face." Pedro Pascal is famous for captivating audiences with his playful and irreverent charm. Born José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal in Santiago, Chile, his family sought political asylum in the United States because of his opposition to military dictator Augusto Pinochet. Pascal's career in film and television spans a wide range of genres, with science fiction and action projects as his signature. Starting with minor TV roles in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Law and Order," his consecration came with his portrayal of Oberyn Martell in "Game of Thrones" and Javier Pena in "Narcos." He was also acclaimed for his role in "The Mandalorian," which earned him a Critics Choice Awards nomination, and later in "The Last of Us," demonstrating his versatility in one of the most ambitious video game adaptations. Also in "Kingsman: The Golden Circle", "Wonder Woman 1984", and alongside Ethan Hawke in Pedro Almodovar's short western "Strange Way of Life". While he enjoys well-deserved success that has helped pave the way for greater Latino representation, he maintains a great deal of humility. From his self-deprecating and hilarious social media videos to Saturday Night Live, where he pokes fun at his leading man status, Pascal also champions LGBTQ+ causes, using his platform to amplify their voices.

Value Investing in Materialists

One of the big themes in Materialists is the value we put on relationships. This is crystallized in the scene where Lucy (Dakota Johnson) comforts a scared bride. What Lucy makes clear to the bride is that she loves her soon-to-be husband because her sister's jealousy of their relationship makes her feel valued. It's not that her husband provides her with material things, but that his very existence and connection to her gives her a sense of value. It makes her feel worthy of her seat at the tab

I Couldn’t Help But Wonder… Is It a Rom-Com Summer?

I don’t know why, but I got dressed up to go to Urban Fare. I threw on a white sundress, let my hair do its naturally curly thing, looked in the mirror—and I swear, I saw the ghost of Carrie Bradshaw staring back at me. Whispering—no, taunting—”you’re just like me.” Ouch. But there I was. Among the organic avocados and the despicably overpriced strawberries, basket in hand… waiting. Waiting for what? Good question. For Pedro Pascal to wander in, inspect a Granny Smith apple, notice me—a broke 24

Lucas.: Based on the discourse so far on Materialists, I don't think we're ready to believe in rom-coms again. Everyone is too pragmatic. I liked it tho and I can't wait to read your thoughts on the movie... cause it is about love, but its also about its transactional nature, and whether one should lower expectations.

The Most Materialistic Part About Materialists Was the Chemistry

The response is split down the middle. I still think the movie sucked. Okay, maybe that's a little bit too harsh, but I just don't feel like I ever connected with anyone or anything in that theatre. Everything felt so bland. So emotionless. What were the stakes, really? Lucy just complained about how mathematical romance had become for her, and then also dated two super hot guys. Don't even get me started on the math, guys. The math sucked; Lucy must've failed school or something because the ans

Materialists was good. I still didn’t like it.

When I first watched the Materialists trailer, I was in a weird spot in my life. I had recently ended a long-term relationship and, in my desperation to reorient myself in a dating landscape I’d never quite understood, let alone enjoyed, I had joined a matchmaking service. Needless to say, the movie caught my interest – it was as though Celine Song knew exactly what I was going through. But then, more or less three months later, I watched the movie in a very different state of mind. I’ve been on

The Rom-Com as Ideology: Why Love Feels Like Marketing?

Rom-coms lied to you: love isn’t blind, it’s branded. This is what happens when Marx writes your dating profile. If you’re still out here looking for a man in finance, trust fund, 6’5”, blue eyes… Think twice because A24’s newest rom-com Materialist, it here to sabotage your dating expectations. I’ll admit, I don’t usually crave on romantic comedies. But Materialist really caught my attention, not just because it stars Pedro Pascal doing a parody of late-stage capitalism , but because it dares t

The Last of Us Season Two: An Intense Journey without Destination

I thought for a while what exactly was what I wanted to express when I decided to write an article about the "series of the moment." I love how we classify what's trending with a temporary label. Pretty interesting, right? Series of the moment? What moment? Today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, a full week? Well, The Last of Us' season two ended yesterday and, together with it, debates sparked off about many controversies created by different points of view. We have those who played the video

You're Missing the Point of The Last of Us

The internet really pisses me off sometimes. Watching season two of The Last of Us week by week has definitely been an experience. I've never played the video games that the show is based on, so everything that happened in the first three episodes has been a complete surprise. I would suggest that you keep it that way if you can. There will be spoilers here, but not just yet. I have some stuff I need to get off my chest first. In the finale of season one, when Ellie's life is at stake, Joel slau

MovieZone: I am a gamer and in fact very faithful to the game and I understand the people who feel that Joel is the main character, and it is as you mention, it is because of the charisma they have for Pedro, however those of us who have played the video games know that the main character in the first game is Joel and the affection they have for him is because it is not the same to see season 1 which lasts about 8 hours, than to play with the character for about 40 hours (this for those who have only played the first game). Now if you have completed the second game you will understand that Abby is not a villain, just one side of the same coin q Ellie .... Abby avenged her father and Ellie in the second game seeks revenge on Abby, both seek to avenge her father, but one is accustomed to, let's call it that way, team 1.

Discover what will happen in seasons 2 and 3 of The Last of us

First of all I want to give credit to Gwen Pemberton that thanks to his article on the subject gave me the idea to write mine, so if you want an opinion without spoilers I invite you to read his article: You're Missing the Point of The Last of Us Ok, get ready, now because what I'm going to tell you is not only a game for me, but a tremendous emotional experience. I know that many complained when it came out, saying “they changed the characters”, that “the story is not what I expected” ... but I
