“I do want to say things in these films. I want audiences to come out with shards stuck in them. I don't care if people love my films or walk out, as long as they have a strong response.” Terry Gilliam is a British director, screenwriter, comedian, and actor born in the United States. He began his career as a cartoonist and rose to prominence as a member of the comedy group Monty Python, where he created the animations that defined his distinctive visual style, and also appeared occasionally as an actor. He made his directorial debut with Monty Python and the Holy Grail (co-directed with Terry Jones), and his first solo film was Jabberwocky (1977). He went on to direct acclaimed films such as Brazil (1985), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), 12 Monkeys (1995), and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). Gilliam is known for his surreal and dreamlike visual aesthetic, his sharp social critiques, and a dark yet playful vision of reality.
