The destitute Kim family struggle to make ends meet in a cramped basement apartment. In 1930s Korea under Japanese occupation, Sookee, a young woman, is hired as a maid to Hideko, a wealthy heiress living in seclusion. Without Hideko's knowledge, Sookee is secretly part of a plot to seduce her, steal her fortune, and imprison her in a mental institution. But as Sookee's genuine feelings for Hideko grow, they forge an unlikely bond and must question their roles and confront their desires.

Based on Kim Kwang-rim's play and inspired by real events, Bong Joon-ho's film follows Park Doo-man and Cho Yong-koo, two detectives in a South Korean province in 1986 investigating a series of brutal rapes and murders. They are joined by Seo Tae-yoon, a detective from Seoul, and although tensions arise within the team, together they will try to uncover who is the responsible.

Inspired by the manga of the same name and directed by Park Chan-wook, the film tells the story of Oh Dae-su, a businessman who is kidnapped one rainy night in 1988.
