It feels pretty average. Just a typical, mediocre show with a big budget for special effects. Unlike the premiere of "Game of Thrones," which had a profound sense of depth and weight, this one falls flat. The plot is clichéd, and the scenes of violence and bloodshed seem exaggerated just to show off how edgy the series can be. The character designs are so stereotypical that you can predict their behavior with a single glance, resulting in very one-dimensional, caricatured portrayals.
"Game of Thrones" was a legendary epic, but this show just feels like a run-of-the-mill palace drama in comparison. By the third episode, it became clear what the problem was. In the original series, every character was deeply involved in the game of thrones, and within just a few episodes, their personalities and family traits were vividly brought to life. The web of intrigue included despicable, sinister, and still noble figures. The main characters had distinct qualities that made them likable and relatable on some level. In this series, however, the characters lack any real personality.
I never expected the special effects to be the least interesting for me. The storytelling in the whole show is crystal clear, and it delves into the conflicts between the female and male lines of inheritance, which really aligns with the original work. The characters are portrayed so vividly thanks to the stellar performances of the cast. Even if you've never seen "Game of Thrones", you could still follow this story, but you'd miss out on a lot of fun. For "Game of Thrones" fans, hearing those familiar family names and that familiar music at the end really gives you goosebumps!
This show doesn't have that "GoT" vibe and feels more like a generic courtly intrigue. It wasn't until I got to the third episode that I figured out what was off. In “GoT”, everyone was in the power games, and the characters' personalities and family backgrounds were vividly shown in just a few episodes. Each main character had their own distinct traits— the good ones were easy to root for, and even the bad ones had some depth that made you care about them. But in this show, the characters just don't stand out. And while "GoT" had so many memorable lines, the dialogue in this one is just plain dull.
Even if you watch this prequel without considering its ties to "Game of Thrones," it's incredibly captivating. Packed with high-budget special effects, the story zeroes in on the core narrative of the heir of House Targaryen right from the get-go. The parallel editing scenes, showcasing the man's struggle alongside the woman's difficult childbirth, really emphasize the familiar, bloody, and dark nature of this world. And finally, the king returns.
