Reimagining Se7en - Societal Wrath
David Fincher’s Se7en is a cinematic masterpiece, known for its dark atmospheric detective story with its haunting portrayal of the seven deadly sins. Bob Woolsey: What a movie to pick! I did not think this would be the first article for this challenge, but I applaud you for taking this on. This is very well argued, but I think the thing you end up losing with this revised ending is the gut punch to the character we've been following throughout the film. Detective Mills is struggling to remain good and hopeful throughout the film. With each horrendous crime, and with the realities of social ills being thrown in his face, he's struggling to rise above it all. With the ending as it was shot, you get that personal and very visceral moment where he can no longer hold back. And bringing these kinds of moments back to character is the key to eliciting that emotional response from an audience, in my opinion. I heard a story one time that Brad Pitt only signed on to do the film because the ending was so dark. By the time they got the green light and were going to begin shooting, someone at the studio had made them change the ending to something less dark. Pitt refused to do the role unless they kept the original ending he'd read when he signed on. So it would seem they did toy with other endings for this project.
