Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf
This 1968 song, considered an anthem of rock and rebellious spirit, has appeared in more than 100 movies and series over the decades.
It was especially popularized by Easy Rider (1969), but has subsequently played in tons of movies, trailers and commercials.
Other songs super used in soundtracks are:
"Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones - heavily used in Scorsese films like Goodfellas and The Departed.
"Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival - appears in many, many Vietnam movies such as Forrest Gump and Apocalypse Now.
"All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan (and his Jimi Hendrix cover) - used in Watchmen, Forrest Gump, American Beauty, etc.
"Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood - classic in movies like Terminator 2, Problem Child and more.
Bonus tidbit:
In trailers, one of the most used songs is not rock, but epic music:
"Lux Aeterna" by Clint Mansell (from Requiem for a Dream) is one of the most exploited pieces in action trailers, though not so much in full movies.
