Which Directors Were Overwhelmed by Dune?

If a newly released film could be expected by sci-fi fans and film lovers, it must be Dune 2, by Denis Villeneuve.

Dune attracts so many attentions not only for its epic novel text, but also for its tortuous history of adaptations. Many well-known directors have ambitions to adapt Dune, but they have never been successful.

One of them is David Lynch. When he receives the filming task of Dune, he hasn’t read the book yet. After reading the first 60 pages, he immediately sets up 8 huge shooting areas and 70 settings in Mexico to do the film, which cost him 50 million dollars.

As a result, when the film is released, Lynch himself couldn't bear to watch it and refused to use his own signature. As we know, he used the code name Alan Smithee.

Lynch wants to let it go, while the public cannot end it up easily. The fans of the book complain about all the adaptations. Those who are not fans concern the reason of the bare foreheads of the sisterhoods. However, Lynch fans excuse him by saying he doesn't have editing rights.

Sharp tongued film critic Pauline Kael said in The New Yorker in late 1984 that Lynch only made the funny parts of the book.

However, the one who dislikes Lynch's version of Dune the most is Alejandro Jodorowsky. He doesn't scold clearly, but his smile betrays him.

After all, Jodorowsky tries to film Dune, too. To make it, he even forms an unparalleled team. He invites famous actors Orson Welles and Gloria Swanson, hires the artist Giger from Switzerland to be responsible for visual creation, and Pink Floyd to handle the music creation.

He even invites Salvador Dali to play the role of the emperor. Look, he's at the top of the poster.

Finally, because of the issue of finance, the film carrying many dreams ends up. Jodorowsky fails to film "Dune", only make his failure into a documentary, Jodorowsky's Dune.

The novel "Dune" is always tried to adapt to a film for more than 50 years. Now, things become possible. Denis Villeneuve says: "Dune is my love letter to the screen."

His Dune 1 is quite successful. Audiences are satisfied with its fabulous design of scenes, sophisticated clothes, and digital special effects.

The casting also balances popularity and story needs. Judging from the different casting of Jodorowsky, Denis Villeneuve and David Lynch, we could understand the director's conscientiousness.

Although Denis Villeneuve's Dune 1 is a success, the content of the original isn’t shown completely in the film. After all, the original book is too grand. Whether Dune and Denis Villeneuve could mutually be successful, we need to wait for audiences’ response to Dune 2.
