The Conjuring Horror Universe Timeline

The Conjuring horror universe's spin-off film, "The Nun," is the second installment after the "Annabelle" series to introduce a demonic character's origin.

Since The Conjuring series of horror films is referred to as a "universe," much like the Marvel superhero movies, it implies that this film series has a unified timeline and setting. Based on the content of the films released so far, the timeline of events is as follows:

In the 15th century, within the Eastern European principality of Transylvania, an evil duke held a demonic ritual in his castle, attempting to open the gates to hell but was thwarted by a group of crusaders. The Vatican used a sacred relic filled with the blood of Jesus to reseal the gates to hell, conducted an exorcism, and turned the castle into a convent, entrusting it to generations of nuns to safeguard the location.

In 1919, as per the Treaty of Versailles, Transylvania officially became part of Romania.

In 1943, in a small town in the American Midwest, the Mullins lost their only daughter, Annabelle, in a car accident. Desperate to communicate with her, Mr. Mullins used a handmade doll to allow a malevolent entity that claimed to be Annabelle to possess it. Subsequently, the Annabelle doll was sealed away.

In 1944, during the Soviet Union's Eastern Front invasion of Axis power Romania, the bombing led to damage to the seal of the gates to hell. An evil entity, a demon disguised as a nun named Valak, started to torment the nuns in the convent, attempting to perform the ritual to have demons take human hosts. Later, a nun named Charlotte from the United States visited the convent and took photographs with three of the nuns.

In 1952, in the Romanian town of Biertan, a Canadian farmer named Frenchie, who lived in the area, delivered food to the closed convent. He discovered a nun named Sister Victoria, who had hanged herself there. She was the last living nun in the convent. Subsequently, the Vatican sent Father Burke, and an apprentice nun named Irene from England to investigate. Irene, who possessed clairvoyant abilities, found the sacred relic containing the blood of Jesus to reseal the gates to hell, while the malevolent entity Valak attached itself to Frenchie.

In 1955, Sister Charlotte returned to the United States and brought five orphans to the Mullins' residence in the American Midwest. The Annabelle doll was unsealed, and the Mullins were murdered. One of the orphans, Janice, became possessed and was adopted by the Higgins family, taking the name Annabelle Higgins. The toy doll was confiscated by the police.

In 1960, Ed and Lorraine Warren, recognized demonologists by the Catholic Church, began their work as paranormal investigators.

In 1965, Annabelle Higgins joined Charles Manson's cult and ran away from home.

In 1967, in Santa Monica, California, Mr. Gordon gifted a pregnant Mrs. Gordon the Annabelle doll. That night, a tragedy occurred in the neighboring Higgins' home. Annabelle Higgins and her cult boyfriend broke in, killed her foster parents as part of a ritual, and then fled to the Gordon residence. The police arrived, and the cult boyfriend was killed. Annabelle Higgins, holding the doll, committed suicide in the Gordons' baby's room. The malevolent spirit returned to the doll. The Gordon couple later moved to Pasadena, and the Annabelle doll disappeared after causing one more death.

In 1968, nurse Debbie's mother purchased the Annabelle doll from a toy store as a gift for her daughter. The malevolent entity began to manifest once again in the apartment where Debbie and her colleague, Camilla, lived. The Warrens became involved and sealed the Annabelle doll in the artifact room of their home.

In 1971, a supernatural event occurred when Maurice was possessed by the spirit of his father, who had experienced the events at the Romanian convent twenty years earlier and had returned to North America under the name Maurice. The Warrens were called to investigate, and Lorraine Warren, who had clairvoyant abilities, encountered the malevolent nun for the first time.

The Harrisville case unfolded in Rhode Island in the same year when the Perron family moved into a new home and encountered the malevolent spirit, Bathsheba, related to the Salem witch trials of 1863. The Warrens resolved this case.

In 1975, in Amityville, New York, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his entire family and later claimed in court that he was controlled by evil forces.

In 1976, the Kats family, who had moved into the Amityville house, experienced paranormal activity and sought help from the church. The Warrens became involved, and Lorraine Warren encountered the malevolent nun for the second time while investigating the site.

In 1977, in Enfield, England, the Hodgson family experienced paranormal phenomena. The spirit of Bill Wilkins, a former resident of the Hodgson house, possessed their young daughter, Janet. Meanwhile, Lorraine Warren encountered the malevolent nun for the third time in Monroe, Connecticut, USA. The church then dispatched the Warrens to handle the Hodgson house case. The malevolent entity controlling this case, the spirit of the demon Valak, finally revealed itself. The Warrens successfully resolved this case.

James Wan has initiated an excellent horror movie series with well-developed settings, logical consistency, and a coherent universe. Maintaining the quality of a horror film series is challenging, especially considering that audiences are becoming increasingly discerning. Let's hope the creative team can stay true to their original vision.
