The MOST Gut-Wrenching Deaths EVER: Why Greys Anatomy's Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan deserved a better ending

Spoilers

Why is it that the best characters on films and tv series often gets the worst ending? Grey's Anatomy is one of those comfort tv series where people can easily get attached to the characters. I find that the first few seasons of Grey's Anatomy were indeed the best and I will not get over. Especially the death of Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan.. Grey's Anatomy currently has 21 seasons, but I find myself watching only the first 11 seasons before going back to the beginning and rewatching it again.

Season 8 was the where we see the unexpected death of Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan. Their deaths were definitely ones that you don't anticipate will happen… like at all. It was certainly a shock and very heartbreaking, the more season you watch, the more connected you get to the characters. I personally think that Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan's death were too early especially when we were just getting to know them and how their dynamic worked.

In the series, Lexie Grey who is the main character's (Meredith Grey) half sister, and Mark Sloan who is best friends with Meredith Grey's lover, Derek Shepard; meet and get in a relationship. We witness their love story unravel and it's really refreshing to see their ups and downs, how they deal with challenges, as well as how they develop as individuals while maintaining their relationship. I personally think that a crucial aspect to their story was the romance and the slight comedy to it. We see Lexie who was just an intern learning her way around the hospital and Mark who is Lexie's superior attending. Their love story felt extremely incomplete and I believe that dying in a plane crash, although a significant turning point of the series and other characters, the death of one the most adored couple in the film deserved more than that…

Just before the plane crash, Lexie and Mark were just in the middle of mending their relationship after breaking up for some time as Mark got his best friend, Callie, pregnant. This was the second time where Lexie found out that Mark had a child and she was not ready for any of that responsibility especially for being just a starting intern. We see how their relationship break from that and how they were able to forgive and make it work because at the end of the day, their love for each other was unconditional, they were soulmates. A happier and more satisfying conclusion might have given them the opportunity to consider a deeper, more mature relationship that could grow into happier plots.

Mark was in the process of maturing and becoming a decent man. However, I feel like they cut his story off too abruptly especially when he would make such an impact in the story if he were to still live. We were given the impression that he was going to live after he was pulled out of the plane crash and taken to the hospital. Mark had been in a coma for some time but woke up with the last bit of bursted energy before finally dying. I think as audience, we were definitely robbed from seeing Mark transform in fatherhood and who could have given more attention-grabbing series plot.

Lexie was in the running to becoming an outstanding surgeon and her future was definitely cut short after losing her life in a plane crash. She had the memory of no other, Lexie had amazing photographic memory. She even got the nickname “Lexiepedia” for her amazing memorizing abilities. Often times, we see 2nd or 3rd year residents use Lexie to go through research studies and pervious cases in hopes to finding solutions faster. We see her relationship with her sister Meredith and her other colleagues transform into great connections. Lexie's story was definitely cut extremely early. Seeing her future speciality, how great of a surgeon she would have been, and lastly, how her relationship with mark could have grown are potential story lines that would have made their endings much more satisfying.

Overall, I think that Lexie and Mark's death was gut wrenching and it was very much a surprise. I think that their characters had powerful roles in the series and taking them out all of a sudden changed the direction of where the series was going. Their death affected many of the other character's lives and it was difficult to see a close knitted community fall apart after the plane crash.
