French-Iranian artist, writer, illustrator and director, whose works have made a milestone in the world of comics and animated films. After completing her high school studies in Europe, she returned to Iran to study Fine Arts, but soon moved to France, where she has resided ever since. Her introduction to the world of comics came at the hand of David B., who suggested her to tell her childhood memories in Iran through this form of expression, which resulted in her famous graphic novel Persepolis.
Together with Vincent Paronnaud, she brought Persepolis to the big screen, launching her career as a director. The film was not only a critical and box-office success, but also won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Film. Consolidating a fundamental voice in the defense of human rights and freedom, a central theme in many of her works.
