Biography

“Acting is an art form and you want to take roles that are challenged and it's more of a challenge I think to play dark characters.” James Franco is an American actor, director and writer, known for his artistic versatility. He began his university studies at UCLA but decided to drop out after his first year to fully pursue acting. His debut came with the series Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000), a comedy that later became a cult classic. This role brought him recognition, but it was his portrayal in the TV movie James Dean (2001) that marked his true breakthrough. For that performance, he received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Franco gained international fame playing Harry Osborn in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007). From there, his filmography expanded with roles in movies such as Milk (2008), Howl (2010), and especially 127 Hours (2010), based on the true story of mountaineer Aron Ralston, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. He developed a strong collaborative relationship with actor and writer Seth Rogen, appearing together in several comedies such as Pineapple Express (2008), This Is the End (2013), Sausage Party (2016), and The Disaster Artist (2017). The latter, which Franco also directed, earned him a second Golden Globe. As a director, he made his debut in 2005 with The Ape and Fool's Gold. Despite his success in film, he never abandoned his intellectual interests. In 2006, he returned to UCLA to complete his degree in English Literature, with a specialization in creative writing. He later attended several graduate programs simultaneously at some of the country’s most prestigious universities. His influence is felt both in the media and through his ongoing exploration of the boundaries between art, cinema, and literature.
