It sucks no matter how hard you scream, so just let go

I quite like Anora (2025) for how it touches on the pulse of the era, or rather, the mindsets of Gen Alpha. I know a lot of you see it as mediocore or at least not worthy of an Oscars, but here's my take on what might have led it to the honor. Speaking of the mindsets of Gen Alpha, the film sums it up best in Toro's (the Godfather played by Karren Karagulian) complaints at the restaurant. He asks one by one about where Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn ) is, but no one knows anything. They just shrug and

I Finally Watched Anora.

It's the Tuesday after the Oscars and I'm in line at the Rio Theatre. The night is cold and the air smells like weed. My Oscar ballot picks were a complete bust; I selected only five correct winners out of a potential 23. It turns out, analyzing movies does not directly correlate to knowing what the Academy is thinking. I'd made the journey to the east side of the city for one movie and one movie only. After many self-imposed delays, I was finally going to watch the recently crowned Best Picture

marvelousmars: As someone who (still) hasn't watched the film, I'm glad you wrote this and offered me yet another take on the film and especially why it deserved (or at least why it got) its accolades. More importantly, though, your description of the theatre cracked me up. What a perfect description of that particular hell.

Should “Anora” include an intimacy coordinator on set (despite Mikey Madison not wanting one)?

The 2025 Oscar-season frontrunner, Anora, is packed with scenes of violence, drugs, and sex. Mikey Madison plays Ani, a stripper whose beauty and professionalism captivate a wealthy Russian heir, Vanya, to the point where she even earns his wedding ring. However, as enforcers sent by Vanya's parents arrive to force them to annul the marriage, Ani faces being gagged, restrained, and tied up. The film has received widespread acclaim, but a recent revelation from Mikey Madison has stirred controver

The New GoldDigger Standard And The Many Faces Of Ani (2024)

'Would You Want To Be Exclusive With Me?' 'Fifteen. Cash. Upfront.' Wait. I think Ani (Mikey Madison ) is the new gold standard for movie gold diggers. She is not like the forever wishing and dreaming Holly Golightly, as played by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Also, you can quickly set aside Vivian Ward played by Julia Roberts in Pretty woman (1990) .She was great but that world does not exist anymore. When a proper gold digger finds a big fish like Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn ), she hol

Anora and Sean Baker: Making the Best Movies with the Least Money

I didn’t think I'd find a favorite 2024 film for me until Anora came along. Sure, the film won the Palme d'Or back in May 2024, but it wasn’t until January 2025 that I finally had the chance to watch it. In typical Sean Baker fashion, Anora mixes absurdity, dark humor, and a raw look at the lives of marginalized people, all with a budget so small it might make a studio executive’s head spin. But it’s not just about what’s on screen—it’s about how he makes magic with so little. You’d think shooti

ANORA is just dust in the wind, as we all are

How do we react when the illusion of reality shatters in our hands? In the ending of Anora, the last winner of the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Sean Baker presents his rawest and quietest closure yet, a standard practice for this filmmaker, who has a talent for portraying the hardships of modern life. Nonetheless, he takes a step back from the ambiguous interpretations he skillfully presented in the last seconds of his previous works. "Life is like a box of chocolates, you

Not Just Another Pretty Woman: Anora's Raw Portrait of Modern Alienation

I finally watched Anora. I think it's very similar to an adult version of "Home Alone." I know this sounds a bit absurd. But let me explain. There's a reason why I think this way. First, both films are comedies with a Christmas spirit. The stories both focus on a vulnerable person who is accidentally left at home. In terms of viewing experience, both films make it easy for audiences to laugh in theaters and enjoy the show in comfort. Second, although their backstories and plot developments diffe

5 Films From VIFF 2024 That Deserve Your Attention

From September 26th to October 6th I attended the 43rd annual Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), during which I saw 21 feature films. VIFF Season is my favourite time of the year because I find myself discovering films I’ve never heard of and probably never would have seen otherwise, oftentimes before a trailer has even been cut for the film. I’ve been attending VIFF regularly for 7 years now, and have been fortunate enough to see films such as Parasite, Marriage Story, The Whale, Por
