Can you believe it? All those kinky props in the Fifty Shades trilogy were whipped up by Lisa, a 66-year-old lady from China!
China is known for its conservative approach to the topic of sex. For instance, when Fifty Shades was causing a stir globally, China refrained from participating in it. Interestingly, all the racy props in the Fifty Shades trilogy were created by a Chinese woman named Lisa. When speaking with the Chinese media, her enthusiasm was palpable. Her candidness and straightforward attitude towards sex, which is a typical taboo subject in China, make her stand out.
Lisa's a cool 66-year-old grandma who's been crafting SM props for 20 years. She used to be in the medical industry when she bumped into one of the first SM prop creators in China. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she found out SM prop-making is a pretty profitable gig. So she kept on asking until the SM prop guy finally agreed to show her the ropes.
Now, Lisa's the first gal in China to specialize in SM products. She designs them based on the comfort of use and aims to give users that intense sensory thrill while keeping them safe for use. Plus, she's got a thing for beauty and romance, which makes her stuff a hit with ladies and younger folks.
Guess what? Her goodies are now available in over 20 countries. The biggie has to be the SM props she whipped up for the Fifty Shades series. Fun fact: when the movie peeps found Lisa, she couldn’t speak a lick of English and had to chat with them through a translator. She pitched the idea to make a series of grey props as the movie's called Fifty Shades of Grey. This was a total curveball for the prop crew, as grey's not a usual SM color. But Lisa gave it a shot, and it worked a treat, so the production team ran with it. Later, she also created all the props for Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

Maybe the Fifty Shades movies aren't Oscar material, but you can't argue with the box office figures. They're a hit worldwide, especially with the ladies. That's something to chew on. Hollywood doesn't often dip its toe in the SM pool. And when it does, it's usually a guy thing. As a woman, I've never been a fan of flicks where females are featured in SM scenes.
Fifty Shades is definitely something else. It's essentially a romantic chick flick and a classic Cinderella story, with a touch of kink. A girl meets a rich, handsome guy who's into some unusual stuff. It's all about the illusion of female power. A woman’s supposed to be submissive in the bedroom, but she puts her foot down and demands real love. It's interesting how the director tries not to make the dominance thing too harsh. The spicy scenes are more sweet than scary. They're dreamy, cozy, bright, and kinda girly. The movie's all in warm yellow tones, and the camera loves to focus on the girl's face, not just her body. The kinky toys are mostly made of silk or soft leather, so they're not scary at all. Some are even made of metal, but none of them are sharp.

Lisa has a heartwarming belief that all toys, even the naughty ones, should be pretty – to create a sense of love and excitement for women. Not forgetting the importance of safety, her designs ensure no harm comes to their users. These thoughtful touches are subtly incorporated into the movie scenes. The props are far from being scary and are actually quite beautiful. What's the message Lisa’s trying to convey? Kinkiness can be about love, desire, and a sensory feast. It's not about being dirty or violent. This could be why Fifty Shades of Grey has won over so many women. It might not be a deeply intellectual film, but it allows its audience to feel safe while indulging in some visual treats.
Lisa's designs, all lovingly hand-drawn, can sometimes flow out by the dozen in a single night of inspiration. Her family was initially unaware and not quite accepting of her work, but has come around in recent years, especially after Fifty Shades of Grey gained global attention. Their support, along with a growing understanding and acceptance from others, has been heartening for Lisa. This film, despite its conservative gender concepts, has brought about a few positive changes. In places where women are often restrained by conservative sexual values, it validates their desires. This validation has injected new hope and enthusiasm into Lisa's career, a remarkable journey for a Chinese woman who grew up in a conservative sexual culture.

Thanks to Lisa's designs, the scenes in Fifty Shades of Grey are gentle and not offensive. I guess we don't need more movies like Fifty Shades of Grey, but we can have more characters like Lisa to explore women's love and desire from a female perspective. We need movies that have no violence or shaming but drive passion and self-satisfaction.
