Rust; The Tragedy that Shake Up Hollywood

RUST it‘s a movie with a complicated behind the scenes story, that cost the life of the cinematographer Hayla Hutchins and it was a controversy surrounding Hollywood.

Directed by Joel Souza and starring Alec Baldwin about a cowboy outlaw who must save his legacy in order to restore his town. It was planned to have a big distributor, good names and originally have other big name actors attached to the project, but the tragedy that surrounded everything, made them impossible to be related to something like that.

BUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?

Rust had a controversy when the film was in the middle of his second day of filming in Bonanza Ranch in New Mexico, they were preparing to shoot a scene involving Alec Baldwin‘s character with a pistol, it was a big scene inside a bank. The B-camera operator, Reid Russell, was situated in a camera dolly, looking at the monitor with Hutchins and the director nearby. The trio behind the monitor were two feet from the firearm and none of them was wearing protecting gear, safety googles or headphones with noise cancellation.

The trio were trying to reposition the camera to remove a shadow and Baldwin was explaining to the crew how he planned to draw the firearm. He removed it from the holster, and the revolver discharged a single time. Baldwid has denied that he didn‘t pull the trigger of the gun, but ABC News later reported that the only way that the gun could been discharged, it‘s by pulling it. When the gun fired, the bullet went to Hutchins in the chest and the director in the shoulder. The script supervisor called 911 and emergency arrived 3 minutes later.

Hutchins was pronounced dead in the hospital and the director was treated and he was fine by the next morning. As a result of the accident, the production shut down entirely and all the crew and actors were questioned by the police. The co-producer of the movie hoped to be able to finish the movie, once the investigation was concluded and to honor Hutchin‘s memory.

BUT… THE FILM IS ANY GOOD?

The movie is not as good as when the production started. Alec Baldwin is great in delivering a quiet performance as the elderly outlaw, the supporting cast are quite good and the difference of locations is notorious, also the film uses a lot of the old tropes to tell the story, which is not bad, but it‘s not great, either. But in terms of cinematography, I can see the incredible work of Hutchins in the colors, the grading and the perfect eye that she had, and how Bianca Cline stepped in to finish her work, it‘s something truly amazing to see.

Obviously, despite all the tragedy, the film ended up to be decent, not bad, not great, but mid. Could it been better if the accident didn‘t happened? It‘s hard to say, because the storyline didn‘t change and some of the dialogue is wooden. But, the intention was there, the production design is one of the most important aspects of the film and the crew gave it all to finish the movie and at least, it premiered in a decent amount of theaters in the USA.
