An In-depth Analysis of the Costumes of Sansa in “Game of Thrones”

Spoilers

We can sum up one sentence about dress change of Sansa. It is from constantly being influenced by the people around her to finally finding herself.

Among all the main characters in GoT, Sansa is the only one who has the skill of making clothes, and her embroidery level is affirmed in the beginning.

In the first episode of the first season, the dress with many knots on the chest was made by Sansa. (We can find it in the talk to Cersei).

The sleeves can be removed and replaced, and the left picture is the appearance after removal. The clothes of the children in the GoT all have this design because their sleeves are easily dirty.

If you look closely at the upper right picture, you will find that Sansa wears an embroidered collar around her neck.

This kind of false collar, which looks like a small U-shaped pillow, is the only gorgeous decoration for the noble women of the North. It is also their status symbol.

I can not believe that the statue on the left is Lyanna Stark. The mason must have been dead. Living in the North is hard in GoT. Because the trade is underdeveloped, the clothes have not changed for hundreds of years. Even the nobles have no money. They can't afford jewelry. The only thing they can decorate their clothes is embroidering.

At the beginning of the first season, Sansa was still a young girl immersed in fantasy. The whole family lined up to greet the king and queen. Only Sansa wore a light blue suit (I think it is intentionally arranged by the designer), standing out from the crowd, expressing her eagerness to leave home to the south.

Another light blue look was the maxi dress worn on the way to King's Landing (left)
It is still a neckline full of knots. The designer said that knotting represents childhood (not gave the reason)

The other dress was brought from the North, with a circle of three-dimensional flowers on the neckline, also made by Sansa (from the design draft comment). It was her most beautiful dress in the GoT (actually). Sansa always expressed herself through her clothes.

When the Stark sisters were in King’s Landing, Erya learned swords with the teacher, but Sansa spent time on embroidering. The embroidery is not a random prop. With a closer look, you will find it is the shawl she is wearing (right).

Unlike Margaery who was sophisticated, Sansa, the naive former queen-to-be, had eager to blend in. She was full of admiration for Cersei and went closer to her intentionally or unintentionally. So she often dressed in the King's Landing manner.

At first, it was just a hairstyle change. The nuns from the North pointed out that Sansa had changed her hairstyle and warned her not to forget her roots.

(There are many lines in the drama to remind us to pay attention to the style and clothing of the characters, Not a word is nonsense.)

The chat was interrupted by the arrival of Joffrey, who gave Sansa a Lannister lion necklace of the same style as Cersei (right), so Sansa took off the little dragonfly necklace (left) that she used to wear before.

Up to here, Sansa had been wearing the clothes of the North.

As soon as her father had an accident, Cersei forced Sansa to show her loyalty. It was the first time she put on the King's Landing style robes. Finally, she became a member of Lannister from head to toe in appearance.

Left: Beheading scene; Right: Pleading for her father

Father beheaded, Sansa immediately recognized her hostage situation. She also saw the true face of Joffrey. In order to survive in King's Landing, there was no other way than to pretend to be submissive (she was really neither stupid nor stupid, it was just that this kind of character bore the burden of humiliation and was easy to be hacked the worst...)

Although the hairstyle and clothing were still King's Landing style, she silently changed the lion pendant back to the original dragonfly.

About the two wrinkled King’s Landing styles, the designer roughly explained: “A little girl imitating others, of course, they did not fit well. Not everyone can always dress beautifully. Sometimes the fit was more important." Well, fine, all words are said by him.

Before the Battle of the Blackwater River in the second season, probably in anticipation of Lannister's defeat, Sansa moved away from the previous low-end Cersei style and put on a skirt of the same style and fabric as her mother.

Next, let us enter the copy-and-paste mode. There are three gray-purple dresses with different fabrics and patterns.

I don’t know if the tailoring of the dress or the actor entered a period of crazy development, during this period, Sansa looked so strong...

Have you noticed two golden snitch decorations on the front of each dress?

This thing has a practical function. It is called the "Penannular brooch" and is used to fix clothes. All clothes in GoT are without buttons but with buckles.

The one in the middle is a collection from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which is the most standard shape of a penannular brooch. The needle coincides with the opening of the ring to form a closed circle.

Another accessory from the purple dress period was the necklace that poisoned Joffrey.

The necklace refers to the art deco style, and the "gem" pendant is 3D printed...resin. So it's not surprising that it looks plastic...but much better than the little rose stall.

Queen of Thorns used Sansa's necklace to poison, which did have a shot down.
She pretended to comfort Sansa, then walked away with a gem

During the purple dress period, for a while, Sansa and Margaery went closely. And she almost married Margaery's brother Loras. At this time, Littlefinger, an enthusiastic crowd, asked the audience to pay attention to the change in Sansa's hairstyle that was likely to Margaery.

Knowing that she was going to marry Handsome Viloras, apart from cheering, her reaction was... Finally, she had nice clothes to wear~

The following rant served as a link between the past and the future. She said, "the dressmakers in Highgarden will be far superior to the ones in King's Landing".The previous ugly clothes may be due to poor tailoring.

(This passage should have been added by the screenwriter. In the original novel, Sansa was satisfied with the seamstress at King's Landing.)

In the end, she married a Lannister and the wedding dress was still made by a tailor in King's Landing. Everything was arranged by Cersei.

It is said that the arm is exposed to show Sansa's fragility (Little Rose's exposed arm is slutty??), but the crotch is decorated with strong armor. In short, there are contradictions everywhere on the whole...

The wedding dress was shaped like curtains, and as heavy as a Mount. I looked down on Cersei's taste...

If you rank the bridal dresses for the 8 weddings in the whole GoT, this dress can at least be ranked second or third from the bottom (after all, the one at the bottom can only be that of her sister-in-law Teresa).

Like many clothes in the GoT, this one is more beautiful in part than in whole.

The embroidered ribbon crossed on the chest represents imprisonment. The wolves and fish in the embroidery represent the background of the Sansa family. And a lion sits on the uppermost collar, representing control Lannister over Sansa.

In order to embroider this ribbon, Michele Carragher, the queen embroiderer of the crew, spent two weeks completing it.

The purple skirt period is coming to an end.

She successfully escaped from the wedding with Joffrey. On the escaping way, her dress was changed quietly from the wedding (left) into the one worn by the Blackwater River (right).

Arriving in the valley, She ushers in the blackening moment that we look forward to.

It was also a tailored dress by Sansa. All materials were sourced locally, such as black feathers from ravens in the valley.

Originally, she was just a blackened beautiful girl, but after wearing an unimaginable giant circle, she seemed to be a black witch who ate children to maintain her youthful beauty. I am afraid she would turn into Meili Sansa in seconds after taking off the necklace...

The designer explained that the necklace pendant was inspired by "Sewing Needle" the name of Arya's sword. The necklace was like a weapon of Sansa.

The reason why Arya named the sword at the beginning was precise: Sansa had a needle that could embroider clothes, and she also wanted a needle... These are a pair of sisters.

As for the meaning of the circle, the designer didn't say a word. When I saw the appearance of the designer herself for countless, I seemed to understand something…

If she was with Littlefinger, she wore the female version of Littlefinger... a similar cloak coat.

Inside the cloak is the wedding dress (it didn't disappear), dyed black to keep a low key.

If so, the designer should let Sansa take off the necklace…

In the second marriage, the northern bride was white. Everything was beautiful except that she met another sociopath.

Every part of this dress is full of memories of her family. The fur cape is the hunting outfit of her father and brother. The fish on the brooch is the totem of the crest of her mother. The outline of the dress is very similar to the one sculpted by her aunt Lyanna.

Life in the Bolton House was worse than death. How could she dress up? During that period, she only wore one stress. When she went to Castle Black to find Jon, it was already dirty in the picture on the right.

There are nearly 100 staff members in the costume department of the crew. Among them, there is a 10-person team responsible for making clothes and armor old to fit the storyline.

In the battle of the bastards, she sewed a dark green velvet dress for herself and embroidered a dire wolf pattern on the chest. Unfortunately, it was covered by the cloak.

Lady Stark, who took back Winterfell, was wearing a slim-fitting long padded jacket. There were three pieces in total. The cloak showed the arrogance of the lord. Instead of embroidery on the U-shaped collar, there are two roaring dire wolf heads.

Cotton jacket No.1

Cotton jacket No.2, with feathers on the chest.

The designer added a crossed leather body strap saying that it represented Sansa regaining control of her body. No one could touch her, especially Little Finger.

Cotton jacket No.3: rhombus weaving pattern.

In the original book, Sansa should be the one who knew how to dress up the most, but the crew didn't give her any preferential treatment. In short, it's a pity.

Even if not compared with the original, the dresses of Sansa are far inferior to Cersei and dragon mother. Except for one or two small highlights, most of the time, the character was completely supported by the classical beauty of the actor Sophie Turner.

Styles are not mentioned in the main context ▼

Total number of Sansa styles: 21+
