Yes, SINNERS is good BUT that's it...

Spoilers

Sinners is written and directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, among others and is the filmmaker's first foray into the horror genre. Two twin brothers, both played by Michael B. Jordan, try to put their troubled lives behind them and return to their hometown to start over, only to find that an even greater evil awaits them to welcome them back.

Ryan Coogler hasn't made a bad movie, he's an incredibly talented filmmaker, you don't need me to tell you, he's already done incredible works. In some ways he did probably my favorite Rocky movie, even though it was the seventh movie in that franchise, he achieved great success in the MCU and also did smaller personal dramas like Fruitveil Station. But Sinners is unique because it's the first film he's made that isn't based on a true story or some intellectual property, this is simply written and directed by him, putting his own sweat, blood, tears and story into this text and from the first 10 minutes of the film, I knew I was watching a movie and I'm really glad I went to the cinema to see it and I'd like to implore you all You guys make sure you see this movie on the biggest screen possible because this movie puts your money on the screen. Apparently this is a budget of $90 million and it shows, this film is full from top to bottom of incredible production value, with an amazing attention to detail for the period in which it is set, which is Mississippi in 1932. The costumes, the sets, the vehicles, all the accessories. This is a film that respects that budget, every frame is full of background actors. It just feels like a world lived and breathed, it's not something you get that often anymore, especially with movies like this, because, like I said, it's not an intellectual property, it's not a sequel, this is a great movie made by a great filmmaker that has a title that doesn't immediately tell their audience what it's about, which has a genre element that is hidden from you for much of the film.

This movie is a risk and Warner is taking that risk with Ryan Coogler and I really hope it pays off because this is the kind of movie I want to see on the big screen. Obviously I love movies in the genre and there's definitely those elements, but the human emotion that is given to each of these characters and the amount of time that we spend with them to really know who they are and to know the struggles that they've gone through in life and the way this world is built and the suggestions that you have about not only the past but also about the future and the way he explores music and how it is woven throughout the lives of many of these characters. It's a lot and a less experienced filmmaker would probably struggle with those changes in tone, but Ryan Coogler handles them with grace.

I stayed away from the trailers for the movie, I just knew that it was about a specific type of entity. So if you know, I'm going to talk about it. It is eventually revealed that there are vampires in this world and when a group of vampires surround that bar later that night it turns into a dust-in-the-dawn situation, which was clearly something I imagine inspired Coogler because this film takes a huge chunk of what is essentially the first half of the film to establish a lived, breathed world where people just live and the element of the genre is there, but it is certainly not the focus. When it becomes the focus there is plenty of blood and guts and excellent practical effects. So, I can only assume that something like From Dust Dusk Till Dawn was on Coogler's mind when he was making the film, at least from a structure standpoint.

Where this movie really shines for me is in its performances, Michael B. Jordan in particular is absolutely magnetic. He is a phenomenal actor and despite this, he has been delivering great performances for a long time. He has not yet somehow found that role of "Oppenheimer" that will earn him the Oscar. Although I really think I deserved it in Creed. He's absolutely amazing in Creed and he's amazing here playing a double role. Both brothers have similar goals, but they are completely different and he is very good at this movie. And there was a scene in this movie that was honestly amazing, not only from a technical perspective because it's a marvel, but also from a spiritual perspective to be honest because it essentially encompasses the long encounters of the story with different types of music and it was really mind-blowing to watch. I think the only thing in the movie that could have been a little bit clearer was the main villain because there are different types of vampires in the movie. There are people who are definitely only interested in blood, but there's a villain played by Jack O'Connell who's like the main vampire and his motivation and exactly what he wanted was communicated for the most part, but I think I would have liked it a little bit more. I mean, that's it.

It's fun, entertaining, but it leaves you with a lot of things to think about, it's 100% interested in exploring its characters on a very deep level, but it's more than that. For example, a character that we could almost consider the main protagonist basically faces the fact that his preacher father doesn't want him to play music and considers it the work of the devil and has to deal with the fact that his father would rather he one day become a preacher than give his incredible talent to the world. Like I said, the characters in the movie are deep and emotionally satisfying when you want to have a lot of blood, guts, and fun.
