An In-depth Analysis of the Costumes of House Stark in‘Game of Thrones’

House Stark is located in the North, with relatively poor products, underdeveloped trade, and a lack of commercial competition. As a result, even the nobles have few choices. Their clothing styles overall focus on practicality.

For example, the blacksmith shop is the only one that makes armor for all soldiers in the North passed down from generation to generation. Unlike King's Landing, which has a steel street. The competition brings progress. That is why only the fashion industry of King's Landing prospers.

Robb Erya Bran

The upper half of the Northland male clothing adopted the European medieval Jerkin (a kind of male vest), and the lower half refers to the ancient Japanese armor. More precisely, it should be the leg skirt of ancient Chinese soldiers.

The decorations come from their family emblems. The sigil of House Stark depicts a dire wolf, usually in pairs.

The first line of the bastard son Jon is to Bran "Father is watching you, and your mother". When Jon looked up, Catelyn's eyes were tense. From the minute he appeared, the director always reminded us of his different identities.

There is a subtle hint in the costumes. Robb wears leather, while Jon wears a commoner.

Another manifestation of the status gap is the fur vest.

The waistcoat of adult nobles is made of wolf fur. It may be considered that rabbit fur and wolf fur are difficult to distinguish on the screen. In GoT, the designer used the whole animal body to show the difference. We can clearly see the head and tail on the waistcoat of an adult nobleman.

Robb Ned Catelyn

The bastard son, adopted sons and children of nobles wear rabbit fur. Regardless of the difference between wolf fur and rabbit fur, some wearing fur is already a symbol of the upper class. Ordinary people can only stuff wool into their collars to keep warm.

Theon Jon Bran

Jon Snow went through three stages from Winterfell to Castle Black:

1. The night watchman

2. On the expedition to the North and beyond the Great Wall, His clothes focus on keeping warm.

3. Lord Commander of the Night's Watch (Jon dressed the same as before)

One rumor about the style of the Night's Watch is that their capes are made of IKEA rugs. But in fact, only the cape of Sam is made of IKEA Skold wool rugs.

The supplies of Castle Black were poor, so they had no special uniform. What they could do was dye their clothes and keep on wearing them. As you can see in the following picture on the right, everyone was dressed differently.

Jon has a Valyrian steel sword called "Longclaw", a gift from the former Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, Jeor Mormont, as a thank-you for saving his life.

"Longclaw" has been passed down by the Mormont family for 500 years. Before giving it as a gift, Jeor Mormont thoughtfully replaced the bear's head on the hilt with a wolf's head.

Jon could recognize it as a Valyrian steel sword at the first glance because the surface has a water ripple pattern, which is easy to identify. The same thing also happened when James gave Brienne the sword.

After Back from the dead and breaking the oath of the night watchman, Jon, the king of the North, finally put on the real vest justifiably.

There are also two black cloaks. The first was Sansa made it for Jon based on her memories of their father, with the dire wolf emblem stamped on the crossed belt. The second was fringed for winter.
However, before Sansa sent him the self-made cloak, Jon did not take the initiative to change into the whole body fur symbolizing his noble status. What was on his shoulders was still the rabbit fur.

The fur cloak gives people a sense of majesty. So when meeting Long Ma, the designer removed his cloak to make him appear vulnerable. When negotiating with Cersei, he needed a deterrent, so he put it on again.

Due to the coldness of the North, metal is not close to the skin. So nobles and ordinary soldiers all wear this long waistcoat with leather-wrapped metal pieces.

The birth of a bastard son may make Jon care more about family identity. He is eager to get closer to his father/uncle Ned in psychology or appearance. So Jon later wore this armor, as did Ned and Robb.

Ned Jon Robb

Kit Harington, who played Jon, has an official height of 173. He not only has to bear the verbal irony of the lines, but also the physical suffering.

He had to wear high heels in order not to look too short when he was in a scene with someone. The cloak weighs 30 kilograms. With weapons and armor, he bore more than 40 kilograms of weight on his body for 10 hours a day, which made him miserable. As soon as the GoT finished, other actors rushed to take home their costumes as souvenirs, but he never wanted to look at them again.

In King's Landing, Ned stubbornly insisted on wearing northern clothes and coldly refused to change.

Sean Bean who played Ned explained that Ned's clothes reflect his personality. He did not want to wear silk costumes to show off in the same way as others in King's Landing.

He wore the uniform of the North for the first half of King's Landing, and after he found out the secret of Joffrey, he put on the armor of the North to show that danger was approaching.

Ned served as Robert's Hand in King's Landing. This position badge is a pattern of holding a needle, which means that the prime minister has to point the way to the king.

The ancestral Valyrian steel sword of the Stark family is called "Ice". Its appearance is simple. "Ice" is also a huge sword. Ned died under the ice in the end. From the photo, we can feel the impressive size.

After Ned's death, Tywin melted the Ice. The ice was big enough to be forged into two swords given to Jaime and Joffrey.

In eight seasons, the cute little Bran grew into Bran who was no longer Bran. Not only his appearance changed, but also the fur on his shoulders upgraded from rabbit fur to a full body.

After Bran ascended the throne, the royal robe was a velvet padded jacket embroidered with a feather pattern symbolizing the Three-Eyed Raven.

The design of the shoulder collar is obviously borrowed from the shoulder coat of the Pope, which strengthens the image of King Bran.
