If the World is Hopeless, then What’s the Point to Fight?

It is until after I have watched the Joker I realized that I’m not so much a superhero fan. And I got more of this feeling after I watched The Batman. These two films convinced me that it was not a hero alone to solve all the problems. Anyone can lose faith, including the hero. I liked Batman because the batman in there wasn’t so much like the ‘perfect hero’, I could see the helpless side of him. More of his weaknesses were presented, and more of his inner struggles were shown. He was an ordinary man with an idealistic goal.

The different appearance of Bruce Wayne than his conventional image in The Batman (2022)

The cinematography was delicate, with a dark, desperate tune but an untamed aesthetic, which spoke for the story background in a pretty decent way: the crime in Gotham City was like a virus, it was everywhere and kept coming back. Any salvation was still sacred but almost close to evil—Crimes only got worse and each time a worse crime happened was forcing batman to give up on his faith. The Batman was an an-ti superhero film, in which the meaning of fighting was suspected, and the hero was doubted to be an injustice. The interesting part was that even the Batman himself can doubt his legitimacy.

Batman attempted to save victims from Riddler but he constantly failed.

Bruce thought his father was a great man, and he believed that he struck the crimes to honour his family. However, the Riddler led him to a different story. His family history was full of lies and his father was a selfish man who could kill to get success. Although later Alfred clarified that his father was actually deceived, it did not fully convince him. Since then, Batman carried his family's sins, even though those sins could be rumours. The Batman demonstrated such irony that when the Batman found the entire Gotham was rotten, occupied by corrupted officers, he felt pointless to keep fighting. If he was a part of the evil side, then who was he to right the wrong?

Batman and Cat, this is probably the most romantic image in the film. Darkness still occupies most part of the frame, but nothing could hold up the romantic lights from spreading out.

Batman was stubborn, not so smart and sensitive, these characteristics made him less of a super hero, but more vivid and close to ordinary people. This is what Batman is supposed to look like, he didn’t have any superpowers, he was just a rich kid with a heroic dream.

Nevertheless, Batman eventually found his answer, he could not stop trying, as keeping trying was the least he could do for this hopeless city. He realized that there were people who were just helpless as he was. Batman regained his meaning in fighting against the crime. The Gotham citizens were suffering, he couldn’t just sit there and watch things becoming worse. He chose humanitarianism.

In the ending scene where Batman jumped off the water, and raised a flare, the place looked like hell. He did bring light to the darkness, but his presence did not make the place any better. He just stopped things from getting worse.

The scene where Batman jumped off the water and lighted a flare.

The next morning of Gotham was still covered with dim light, and the darkness lingered around. Cat asked Batman why he insisted on fighting a losing battle, but he did not answer. I suppose he was used to the path he chose already. He knew what Cat was looking for and he definitely thought about going with her, but he chose to keep on going on his path. At the moment he went on a different way than Cat, his faith became stronger than ever.
